I've read that Linux is used in servers, and I'm curious as to which version of Linux is used the most.

A: Lubuntu for things with little processing power, Ubuntu for normal PCs, and if you need to do anything else then it's best if you do the research yourself.

A: Have you not googled it? Are you sure StackOverflow doesn't have an answer? Does the error tell you what's wrong? If the answer is no to all of those, message me.

When I used to host minecraft servers, I ran Lubuntu which is just a linux distro. It was good for what it was worth since one thing server owners try to keep in mind is that they have to partition out memory, CPU, and hard drive space to each person that wants their server hosted.

all of them. google linux server market share. you will find numbers from Azure and AWS on what their customers are running in their cloud platforms. You will find Ubuntu is very popular

Depends on the application

 

aka... you run the OS that is recommended by the vendor for the version of the application you are on. 

Can Anybody Link A Virtual Machine while I go download some RAM?

AFAIK, people usually use distros with long term support. Debian, SUSE, CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Ubuntu are examples of distros that offer long term support.

Well it depends, since there are so many distributions available that are sometimes tailed to a specific application or architecture.

Remember, linux is not an OS, its a kernel. The distros are what the "OS" is.

Debian stable releases are my personal favorite and in my experience the most stable (not including red hat as I've never used it). Debian also has some of the longest support periods (again excluding red hat potentially)

You can use most distros as a server, but you'll commonly see Debian and Slackware used, though they don't have distinct server variants--but they lend themselves very nicely to being configured as servers.  As for distros that are specifically designed for server use, Ubuntu Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and SUSE Enterprise Linux all have a corprorate support infrastructure behind them, which makes them appealing to a lot of businesses.  CentOS is a community driven fork of Red Hat that's very popular, too.

The good thing about Linux is that the only difference between "server" versions of distros and "desktop" versions are more often than not the packages that come included, thats pretty much it.

This looks like a pretty big screw up. The LTS version doesnt do this. The 17.04 version doesn't get much support life so its pretty dumb of them to put ads in there and drive people off. I wonder how canonical will respond.

I tried Debian 9 last week and was not impressed with lag in gnome so I reinstalled ubuntu 16 lts. I have been watching my network with etherape and it does show some random connections to an amazon ip when browser is closed. I put that down to the package manager checking updates but now I'm not sure. I might give Debian another chance but with a different desktop like my old favourite openbox
