What can people use my ip address for?

Hey my buddy has a home made server and we were testing it out by sending some stuff to it and back and he told me that it was showing my ip address when we were doing that.

So i was interested about what could people do if they found out my ip address? I know him well so i don't think he'd use it for anything bad.

They could start prodding your network for holes. This is especially bad if your router has some "personal cloud" features that are enabled by default.

if you ever open ports on your router or host stuff they could try to break into your network if anything your running is outdated or has a exploit

Not all the time. I have actually been able to find my address with exact longitude and latitude with my ip

Not really, it isn't hard also to get someones IP, on it's own, it's like knowing someones address, they can watch you, but they still need to actually break in, and whether or not it's worth their time.

They can get a good idea of where you're located, but they cannot really track what you do passively unless they're sitting between you and whatever you're connecting to.

If your ports are forwarded to your computer's network addresses, then maybe. However if the router itself has a hole in it, they can start poking at every device for holes and if there's a hole they can exploit, then they can see what's going on.

No. A random hacker's time is better spent targeting a more valuable target, like Google's databases. Unless you're someone who's high profile, they won't bother.

 

It's like home security. Sure you could invest in expensive locks and monitoring systems. But as long as you're not flashing off your valuables or whatnot, a random thief is probably not going to choose your house to rob (or rather, you have the same chance as any one else).

It doesn't.

For example, http://ip-tracker.org gives you the continent, country, capital, state, city, postal code for the ISP hub nearest to you, area code, metro code, your ISP, time zone, local time, etc...

It doesn't display street address. I've never seen an IP lookup tool that does.

It's not a big deal. If you were a bank, a business or some other juicy target then it would be worth the effort spent breaking in but hackers don't really focus on random people unless they know you.

Risk vs reward and all that. Like someone might be tempted to hack someone super wealthy, in the hopes of getting their credit cards etc. But if someone were to get mine, they'd just find their transactions declining same as me.

Yeah i'm definitely not a good target because i'm broke... Especially after this Summer sale on Steam.

It is just like sending someone a letter. The person knows then your address and could do a lot of shady stuff like ordering food to your address or buying electronics. Does this happen? I can't remember reading about incidents like it so I would say no.

You could see the IP as your home address of the building you live in. Just that is harmless but it tells a thief where it could break in.
