New GPU @ CES replacing RX 480?

GArmyHD

Hi everyone,

I was purchasing some parts for my first PC Build ever, and the guy at the counter told me, after I learned that the 480 that I wanted was out of stock, that 'there may be a replacement to the current Polaris GPUs', and he wasn't talking about VEGA (which is supposed to be higher end and therefore more expensive). He knew they were just rumours, and I did some research on my own and I couldn't find anything. Does anyone know anything?

Many thanks in advance

Jack

No, this is going to be a much higher-end card. It was shown at the Ryzen event running Battlefront's upcoming Rogue One DLC at a locked 4k 60FPS. AMD has also conceded the high-end to NVidia. Even with the slashed prices on the Fury and Fury X, they're behind the GTX 1070 in performance despite beating it for value. Nothing really competes with the 1080, and I suspect that's what this card is going after. Probably at the price of a GTX 1070 or less.

Aside from the aforementioned evidence, it just doesn't make sense to antiquate a card as new as the RX 480.

I doubt AMD will have replacement for the $200-240 price point soon, which RX480 is at right now. The RX480 is very competitive at that price range.

The new card will probably target GTX1070 and 1080.

There will be a refresh of the Vega architecture. Might be the 490, might be a 580. No one knows, probably not even AMD LOL

If anyone asks you never saw me.

It's just a dumb rumor because AMD keeps saying "new architecture coming." Fiji was considered a new architecture because it used HBM even though it was GCN 3 just like Tonga. What we're getting is just GCN 4 on bigger dies.
