Adulting Help

iamdarkyoshi

I'm a reno nevada resident. Its nearing time for me to GTFO of my parents' house. I went on Zillow, and found the cheapest house I can find.

And its this one:

http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/Reno-NV/pmf,pf_pt/7274216_zpid/13478_rid/50000-_price/194-_mp/pricea_sort/39.803261,-119.381562,39.274789,-120.31952_rect/9_zm/

There is absolutely no way in hell that I'm going to live in an apartment, I need space for all my shit.

I know absolutely fuck all about adulting, as you can probably tell, so go easy on me.

I've got a 2013 chevy volt as my car, and I bought it right then and there, no loans or anything. So theres transport sorted.

Speaking of which, I've never used a credit card. Everything has been debit for me.

So how would one calculate monthly expenses for someone like me? I don't even know where to start.

Allocate a budget for your food

then some for your utilities (don't know if an apartment has this but)

some for your apartment (always be able to pay the full amount a few days before the due date)

gas (try to conserve on your gas)

rest goes to your savings

I assume the apartment has your necessary items like a fridge or a microwave

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

Protip: IIRC easy to get credit would be to open up a credit card and put some monthly items on it (cheap, don't use the card for anything else) for example phone bill, Netflix, etc

(if I'm wrong, it was a Reddit LPT)

50% of income for expenses, 30% for living, 20% for everything else.

that 50% income should cover worst case scenario when it comes to rent(mortgage, whatever floats your goat)+bills

30% is for food, gas money and other things required for you to actually live decently.

20% is for saving up money, stupidity-induced purchases and everything else that isn't required.

Well sell some shit. You don't want A house at this point because mortgage, not stable job, maybe a job opportunity outside of your area (with a house you're tied down)

Under the table

bathroom (you have to improvise)

on the wall (like you said, that's unused space that's usuable)

under bed (or on top of your bed on not sleeping area)

drawers

Five more years to plan and improve on.

An apartment isn't happening unless I get properly desperate. I don't like living near other humans anyway, I rarely use headphones...

I did a project on this last year, it's in your best interest to find a room mate and probably lease a house, don't try to buy one at 18. This will greatly cut down on your monthly expenses in rent. @revsilverspine covered expenses, so try to live as cheaply as possible until you can find a better paying job. Put money away monthly for when shit hits the fan, your Volt's battery going nuclear for example.

that 50/30/20 is some Home Ec stuff that I dismissed as useless crap when it was taught to me. Turned out to be actually pretty freakin' good, but still doesn't cover real life (if I'd only be relying on my dayjob, it'd be more like 80/20/ohshit)

Here's something else I didn't see anyone mention: you want a house?  To buy a house?  Get ready for the maintenance costs.  Roof leaking?  That's a few grand if they can't patch it.  Sewer backing up?  Oh, boy.  Furnace goes out?  Fun times.

Yes, those are all huge expenses that don't happen all the time.  But they could and do happen.  I've had to deal with all of them in the time I've lived in the house I'm in now.  And that's just that stuff.  What happens when the fridge dies, or the pipes burst, or the electric overloads?  Foundation issues?  Windows break?  Yeah, insurance might cover some of it, but not all of it.

You need to know what you're getting into before you even think about buying a house.  No landlord's going to pay to fix these things for you.

And let's not even get started on property taxes.

In all seriousness, what kind of

have you got that wouldn't fit in an apartment? A house is a little much to start with, especially one that small

Its a hell of a lot larger than the apartment my family had to stay in while we waited for bullshite to clear, and I also have cats.

I mainly need a personal garage for all of my nonsense, plus a space for my car.
