AM4 cooler mounting

Sabbilon

In looking at future Ryzen options, I read earlier reports that AM4 cooler mounting was the same as AM3+.  I am now finding out that this is not totally true.  It seems the through board holes have changed, the rectangle pattern becoming closer to a square.  AM3+ being  96 X 48 mm and AM4 being 90 X 54 mm.  Perhaps the wraith cooler above board interface is the same with the stock mounting bars but the mounting bars have changed from AM3+ to AM4

Noctua seem to already have adapters.

Last but not least, Noctua showed a prototype of its mounting upgrade kit for the upcoming AMD AM4 socket. The upgrade kit will be backwards compatible with all Noctua retail coolers since 2005 except the NH-L9i and will offer the possibility of installing the cooler turned by 90°. Owners of Noctua coolers will be able to order the kit free of charge by uploading a proof of purchase (scan or electronic copy of the invoice) of both a Noctua CPU cooler and an AM4 CPU or motherboard. The kit will be available as soon as the AM4 platform is officially launched.

If connector Socket FM2 + holes are located at the corners of an imaginary rectangle with sides 96 x 48 mm, then the Socket AM4 aspect ratio is different: 90 x 54 mm.  As explained by Japanese colleagues, using cooling system strengthening plates require specific fasteners for Socket AM4.  If the plate is not required, the change in distance between the holes may be offset in a regular transfer pins fastening the cooler frame.

I'm impressed AMD has kept the same damn mount for soooooooooooooooo long

I mean, 939, AM2/+/3/+, FM1/2/whateverotherFMtherewas ALL had the same damn mount... That's doing pretty damn good.

Intel hasn't changed their cooler mount since the 939 days either. There isn't that much of a reason to change it as long as the CPU itself doesn't change in size significantly.

Whoops, I was thinking about modern cooler compatibility, but I forgot that modern coolers just accommodate back to 775.

I think that's probably the issue. Intel's 8 core cpus have almost 1000 more pins than the quads.

All LGA 115x sockets have the same mounts, while LGA 775, 1366 and 2011 all have different mounts.

LGA 1156 was launched in 2009, while Socket 939 was launched in 2004, so AMD has kept the same mounts 5 years longer than Intel ;)

right....I was thinking that all modern coolers support back to 775. But I forgot they just include multiple sets of mounting hardware.

LGA 115x, 1366 and 775 have annoyingly similar mounting holes, i really don't get why Intel had to make them different :P

Although when the mounts are so similar, cooler manufacturers can usually include support for all of the three sockets on one bracket.

Yes they have. Quite a few times, really. 775 is small, 1366 is big, and the only ones that are the same are the 115x sockets. Not to mention that you get 2011 and a few variations of it.

Time to hate AMD. They keep changing the mounting alignment unlike Intel who stuck to the same thing for ages.

Evil AMD colluding with cooler manufacturers so they can force us into buying new coolers.

You can tell cuz the stock Wraith cooler they provide was the worst ever made by a CPU vendor.

Its bad enough that they change the socket every other generation. What a waste of resources and our money.

AMD hasn't changed their cooler mounts since socket 939, Intel has changed theirs quite a few times. The wraith cooler is also one of the best stock coolers ever made.

and how great isnt it when they dont make each "notch" in their plate line up with the correct holes, so you end up fiddling with the shitty bracket and screws for ages before finding a combo that actually works and actually applies equal pressure

Yes but 6 months and 1 week ago tech sources were reporting they were the same.  Just last night I hear techies saying "not sure" and people still commenting insisting AM3+ and AM4 were the same for mounting because of Wraith cooler.
