IMHO having to use a dongle for USB A is unacceptable for an average user and having to use a dongle for ethernet is unacceptable for IT people.

Just keeping this here as a It should be thin, but not that much so normal ports can be present, like this is minimum I guess (it doesn't have to be convertible): 772907_3_f.jpeg

 

For me as a developer and normal laptop user it should have:

- one Thunderbolt 3 (with eGPU level of support - "just in case" when those get cheaper and it's actually needed)

- USB3 (2) ports

- Ethernet, VGA, SD card would be nice (+/- HDMI)

- normal mobile laptop CPU, like a quad core i5/i7 if needed

- the most epic keyboard of the universe

 

There is 15" Clevo N650DU - it's top Intel CPU only, no dGPU... and no Thunderbolt 3 - but it has VGA, HDMI, Ethernet, USBs, two USB 3.1 Type 2, DVD-Drive (!) with 5-6h of claimed battery life at 2,5kg weight and 32mm height. Clevo W670R(something) is a 17,3" with similar idea and battery life and lack of TB3. And they look bit plastic too. Toshiba Radius above looks much better with aluminium case. Non convertible variant comes with quad core CPU but also doesn't have TB3. There is Acer Aspire V Nitro Black Edition - it looks thin enough, it has TB3, 17,3" at 3kg ;) so not light.

Also as per the 'huge battery vs thinnness'

 

I think 10h per charge is the right amount from a productivity standpoint. That means you can go all day at work. These days most modern laptops charge via USB-C so you can easily buy a large battery bank if you want more portable life.

@LinusTech Yes Linus, you are absolutely right.

 

I would seriously consider buying a Laptop that has two days of advertised battery-life!!! This way I would maybe get 20 hours of heavy use out of it. Also please an easy to replace battery.

 

I am even at a point where I am thinking about building my own Laptop from replacement parts or a mini ITX motherboard where I resolder the IO and connectors because I can't find the features that I want anywhere. - mainly loooong battery-life, all the IO I want without adapters, easy repairability and decent wifi that does not break all the time - I have experience with electronics but the problem is the time this would take and that I do not want to get into trouble for taking a self build Laptop without certification on a plane.

 

I do not mind if the Laptop is even 3 to 4 cm thick and weights up to 4 kg, like basically every Laptop a few years ago!

It is really frustrating seeing the Industry going into the exact opposite direction that you want. I can't be the only one.

I've been screaming this for years - thin means compromise!!! Enthusiasts and serious users WANT to be able to do things like replace batteries with extended capacity ones, swap hard drives at will and upgrade their memory.

 

I don't care and don't want a notebook to be a style statement where form beats function. A work tool should first and foremost be a WORK TOOL. Going thin does nothing but hinder expandability, limit performance options, introduce heat extraction issues and caps your unplugged run time. Never mind making it a PITA to service when it comes to cleaning out dust and replacing those junk sleeve-bearing fans when they die after 8000 hours.

Actually, I believe there would be a real market there. The most difficult parts in designing a Laptop is the motherboard, keyboard and screen/hinge. Changing the housing is really easy. Developement would not be like designing a new product from scratch. There should be options with increased battery life for all Ultraportables. You would only need to Change the housing, add batteries and probably change the charging circuit to accommodate fast charging with the increased battery size.

 

I guess if you put 100 Wh of batteries in there (which is the maximum allowed on planes) you would not quite double the weight but increase battery life to realworld 17h of use. (estimated based on current battery life and usual Wh, unfortunately I do not know how many Wh the battery of this thing has.

 

Also, the charging circuit should not be integrated in the Motherboard, this stuff breaks just way too often and should be easy to repair.

I just wanted to point out that I think Linus made a mistake with the processor.

The i5-7Y54 is not U-class. The U's have 15W TDP.

It's a Y-class processor or in the 6th gen it would have been called a Core m5, but Intel changed the names for some reason.

 

On a side note, I think the Swift 5 as detailed here would be a much more interesting and useful laptop. With an actual U-series cpu, backlit keyboard and I think it will be cheaper as well. And none of this thinnest nonsense.

With usb-C barely hitting the market nowadays, try to find a mouse to plug in with type C , what the fuck is that IO ? 

The thing is, these products for me are about ease of use and portability. Dongles are the opposite of that.

If I need to use a fucking dongle to do shit, YOU_HAVE_LOST_ME as a customer. The most common display to use while on the go will probably still be HDMI, so where is that port? 

 

The only good thing about these laptops is that it forces the manufacturer to use SSD storage. But other then that, you get a bad keyboard because there is no room, you get bad IO because there is no room, you get average battery capacity because there is no room.

 

And can I also get a silent rant going about the webcam. Years of development in laptops, we can build them this thin, but you can't make a decent webcam?? I remember my 9-year old laptop that I had to say goodbye to last year. it had a 720P webcam. With all the camera technology we can put in smartphones, why is it so hard to invest in something like that...

I would even go as far as to say even VGA is still used quite a lot in many companies that are not tech related. Even in my University i believe there are a few smaller presentation rooms that still use it. Dongles also increase the risk of random connectivity, problems that you just don't need when you are giving presentations. A HDMI port is a must for me!

 

The positive thing of the USB Type-C connector for connecting displays is, that the cable is much thinner and more flexible and does not drag your mobile device around like most HDMI cables. On the other hand they are probably easier to break.

 - 35 W processor

 - 63 Wh battery (the Spectre is at 38 Wh, the Swift at 41 [calculated from 2770 mAh 4 cells])

 - 2 SODIMM slots, been running 16 GB of RAM since 3 years and I'm looking for an UPgrade here

 - 2 SSDs

 - Ethernet, full size DP, VGA, 3 USB A, SD card reader and an Expresscard expansion slot...

 

I guess I might be considered some sort of IT guy or some sort of developer, but it is completely normal-person use cases that makes me want a VGA port and a good keyboard without going up to 14" class which are now too wide to use on the train. Also too wide to fit in my backpack. Simply unlikely to fit where I need it to be.

 

Maybe a bit less normal is absolutely needing an Ethernet port, but there should still be enough of us to be a viable market. Same goes for wanting a quad-core in a truly small footprint, does it not? Back me up here!

I kind of hoped there you would end with "like this one". Really this would be close to an ideal System for me, although I do not really need the 2 SSD option, one is enough for me. But I see how someone could use it and it isn't like it takes that much space.

One Feature I can think of, that I really really want: A screen that is perfectly readable in sunlight.

It is not like there are not enough ideas of what to develope (Yes I'm looking at you Apple ;-)

 

Everything you mentioned above isn't even really something a company would need to develope. Just put everything in one system! I always hoped Lenovo would go this direction with one of their product lines.

On the other side of the fence, it seems like the entire PC industry still haven't gotten over that hideous "gaming" look on high performance laptops, a 5 year old Macbook Pro 17' probably still feels and looks better than any of the newer lapzillas out there. How hard is it for them to build subtle looking laptops like what Razer is doing?

Talking about Apple, why would they think it's a good idea to put a keyboard with zero travel and solder the SSD on a $2000+ laptop that people rely on for important work? (I know you should be making backups but still)

right, concerning modern, clean look Apple would take the cake every time (in my opinion, although I'm not so sure about that rose gold nonsense, but people seem to like it) I would really like to use a Macbook Pro but I can't sacrifice everything I need for looks.

I also want to be able to repair and upgrade my stuff.

 

What I would like to see is a solid Laptop with a Macbook 2013 like design where you can easily access and replace the SSD (M.2 NVMe, no need for a proprietary connector), the RAM and the battery. It would even be quite easy to use PCIe to let the customer choose which ports he wants. Just have a small space for something like a pcie card for a Laptop.

I actually want a laptop that resembles the non retina MBP 15'with a GTX 1060 inside, it feels like there's enough room to cool a high end GPU if you ditch the optical drive for beefier cooling.

IMHO... Going so thin that you'd need an adapter for typical connectors is brain damage. Especially at that price point. Definitely think that a beefier laptop that had reasonable power, good IO including HDMI/Display Ports, Ethernet, USB 3.0 AND USB Type C, and etc. Extended battery life or even easy swap batteries would be the shit.
