if you buy a $500 set of 3.5mm headphones now, you are using the iphones dac and amp, 

 

if you buy a $500 set of lightning headphones, you can use a superior dac and amp built into the headphones

 

testing the lightning to 3,5mm is pointless , as is testing the included earpods, also it doesnt take into account that lightning can power ANC, charge bluetooth headphones when cabled, give advanced controls etc - these are also features

Except..Apple do not market that from what I can see.. in fact on the iPhone 7 page there is not a single mention of "better audio on lightning" - it just advertises the airpods, that you can buy lightning headphones or use 3.5mm headphones via the adapter - they are pushing wireless headphones more than lightning anything

Just watching it now, -- not mentioned at all actually, he never once says that the lightning port provides better audio quality 

 

he mentions that lightning was designed to be an audio port, it can power advanced features like noise cancelling or other sensors and that it can pass analog audio if needed

 

he mentions that phones are crammed inside, and that making space for a single purpose jack that is quite large is a big usage of space they an dedicate to other hardware

and he says apples future of audio is wireless

EDIT - to clarify I am not saying I agree with Apple - just that it isnt stopping me buy an iPhone

I never assumed that the decision was driven by the desire for more audio quality, but that's not to say it couldn't be better.  It could also be worse.  It entirely depends on the quality of the dac and amp you end up using, be it the one in their little "adapter", or the one provided with the first pair of "lightning headphones" you buy.  Keep in mind that people looking for high quality audio often spend $100 or more on each of those components, so (to all of those who were expecting higher quality) if you think you're gonna get a miracle for $40 or something like that, well... you may have been expecting too much  

 

Edit: It's worth adding that in the vast majority of cases, I suspect that the "bottleneck", if you will, for audio quality was the headphones people are using, not the dac/amp equipment in the phone.  This is certainly true 100% if you were using the bundled ear buds or anything like them.

We don't store music on iPhones in 512Kb I think 256Kb is the best and even then most people don't notice the difference. To say it would bring higher quality music is ridiculous. Removing the jack is pointless. It worked and worked well. Don't fix it if it isn't broken

To add more to the news.

Many users are having trouble with their headphones using the adapter. Mostly that the control of headsets stops working randomly, and comes back, or stops working.

Apple has acknowledge the issue and says it is looking for a fix.

The mentality should be, given we dont have an analogue port that has its own dedicated AMP & DAC, most people should presume that the new digital universal port allows for some benefits like the extreme water resistance weve seen so far and the "magical home button", thanks to better 3D touch, i suppose its a way for people to realise that the port wont matter much at all if were using the same 6€ earphones that come in the box :/.

tfw the akg in-ear that came with my V10 are one of the best in ear i've ever used. Too bad they're in-ears and i can't stand them

Except that would be more expensive since you will still need a DAC inside your phone anyway (for the speakers).
And it's easier to fit a good DAC inside a 1000 dollar phone, than 100 dollar earphones (for example).

The point is that it's digital, not that it's more durable. Sound quality depends on the headphones (or on the adapter if you adapt it to jack, but then you are back where you started).
