RX 480 just hit USA stores, initial supply 20x bigger than one from 1080

#rx480hype

So, as you know, RX 480 promissed some great performance for a good price. But also that means that supplies will just be emptied in a matter of days. But fear no more, AMD feeds stores with a supply that is about 20x bigger than an initial supply of GTX 1080s.

Recently, Microcenter said to customers that they will receive 100 RX 480s, which is exactly 25x bigger than the amount of 1080s they got which was just four.

Also it was noted that first supply will be reference only, so if you want better cooling, pls wait.

I'm honestly more interested in the RX470/460. Not into VR at all, not playing AAA titles (mostly TF2 and Half Life 2 (with Cinematic mod though)). Looks like the RX470 is my way to go.

Here's hoping they launch at the same time, and people get to review them at the same time.

I've heard 5% to 10% slower than GTX 1070 that's not bad.

I'm hoping it'll be capable of High Preset @ 1440p 60fps

I wish this would be true, but I highly doubt it. I will pick the 8gb model if performance is similar or better than my 970

Why can't that mean that they "perform" the same or similar?

Why can't my Apple ($230) "perform" close to the Organic ($380 to $500) Orange?

It will be about 40% to 45% slower. These cards are aimed at completely different markets and shouldn't even be compared.

The 480 will target 390/390X performance at stock clocks and Fury performance when overclocked.

Because these companies need to make money too. They're already banking super hard on making enough to cover rnd for this entirely new generation, that's why the performance is so great, for such a low price. AMD needs to move metric fuckloads of these to make it through the hole they're in.

Anyways isn't the GTX 1070 marginally better than the 980ti, and the 980ti being marginally better than the 980?

Okay sure, but again why can't they have a product that does what another product does very similarly to that product for quite a bit less.

Regardless we'll know for sure soon. I'm banking on it doing pretty well at 1440p (60fps with High Preset)

980 Ti is quite a bit faster than 980, over 30% faster to be exact. 980 Ti is usually on par with Fury X performance to which the 480 should not be able to reach, even when overclocked to 1.6GHz+.

Huh. Well again we'll see. It sounded like at stock the RX 480 will have 5.8tflops. OC'd to 1.5GHz brings you to about 6.1tflops.

I guess I forgot how well the 980ti performed.

Also are you talking about the 4GB or 8GB version, games can sometimes be held back by vram.

It should do 1440p60 with maxed settings on well optimized AAA games like GTA5 etc ...

When OC to 1.5GHz, then it will do over 6.9 tflops.

With the benchmarks shown, it has always been the 8GB card.

Let me paint the picture for everyone.

Rx 480 = a little above GTX 980

GTX 1070 = a little above a GTX 980 ti

That could put at a pretty good place for 1440p gaming even if it is intended for budget VR or budget-High End 1080p I think it can still sort of fit in that 60fps sweetspot for 1440p at high preset. I mean I don't expect it get the 70 to 90fps that the 1070 gets with like ultra preset or maxed out at 1440p but I think it's reasonable to expect it to get 60fps average (around 50fps min, 80 to 90fps max) at high preset at 1440p.

Only the 29th of June will tell for sure. Regardless what happens I think I'll probably get an RX 480 but I might have to go down to 1080p, not a huge deal. But not preferable.
