Google 2-Step Verification update

Google has added an optional 2-Step Verification setting to sign into your account with one tap.

Quote

There are multiple ways your end users can approve sign-in requests via 2SV—by tapping a Security Key, by entering a verification code sent to their phone or, starting today, by approving a prompt like the one below that will pop up on their phone.

Notes:

  • Currently, you can't have Security Keys and Google prompt enabled at the same time.
  • A data connection is required to use Google prompt.
  • Android users will need updated Google Play Services to use Google prompt.
  • iOS users will need the Google Search app installed on their phone to use Google prompt.

Because people are lazy and tapping once is easier than inputting a code.

I thought that google already blocked new devices anyways?

SMS is not encrypted. it's not the biggest security flaw but still. you can send encrypted SMS's but then you need an app to encrypt and decrypt it.

Blizzard does this too. I think it's kinda cool. Certainly easier but typing in a code/waiting for a code or whatever was fine too. So is waiting for the device used for authenticating to receive the request.

Blizzard started doing this a couple of days ago

Blizzard had the verification key for more than a year with their Battle.net authenticator, they added the one button login few days ago. Not sure to which you are referring.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

the one click - it's extremely similar to Google's new auth method

this is like what blizzard just put into the phone authenticater app when you log in instead of getting a code vaild for 60 seconds you just get a code on the screen you logged in with and a prompt with the same code on.

I lurk a lot

Also some people have text messages showing even when the phone is locked.

MS accounts had this for a longass time. I still prefer the method that doesn't involve internet access. Inherently more secure and fail proof.

you can use both
