Just for other rock/metal and non mainstream music fans, come lets talk and spread our music sense

Ahh, Modest Mouse. That brings me back to my teen years. 

 

I don't really think you could consider rock/metal non-mainstream, seeing how rock as a genre (and by extention, metal) outsold pop, and genres related to or often seen as pop, in the US by a lot in 2014 (the latest year I could find stats for). 

Rock and metal is very much the mainstream. 

 

All that said, I'm a big fan of almost all music genres rock and metal included. I'm especially a fan of black metal

Seriously though... Is it still Rock if it's a cover of a folk song?

I mean both songs are good, the original by Bob Dylan and the cover by Cage the Elephant. It covers such a sad topic, considering Bob Dylan wrote it off an event that actually happened.

Well the Indie/Alternative Rock is generally the stuff that's not mainstream. Like Cage the Elephant isn't a mainstream Rock band.

Modest Mouse is one of the more mainstream of the Indie/Alternative variant of Rock. I still like Cage and Modest the same. 

 

David Bowie kinda did some stuff with the Rock Genre. But he wasn't tied down to one genre and could do quite a few things pretty well... I was watching some American Horror Story (Freak Show) sometime last year and Jessica Lange (Elsa Mars in that season) had sung Life on Mars? by David Bowie, and that's what got me interested into more of Bowie's works. As I was getting into some of his older music, a few weeks later Blackstar was on Youtube and it was kinda interesting, then yeah... :|

I liked the saredist, What i meant is that would not mind mainstream rock/metal, but what i like more is experimental and indie

Cage the Elephant's latest album (which is great) reached number 3 on both the Billboard Rock Chart and the Billboard Alternative Chart. 

Thank You Happy Birthday reached number 2 on the Billboard 200 Chart. 

All three charts require some pretty high sale figures to reach that level. 

 

I guess it comes down to the interpretation of the word ´mainstream´.

Personally, I would consider a band mainstream if they have high sale figures on their albums, since that would translate to them being know by a large amount of people. 

I tend to think in this way becuase people tend to follow the word "non-mainstream" with "they need our support". 

While I don't disagree that we should support the artists we love, using economics as an argument falls flat when you see the album sale of most rock (and to some extend metal) bands. 

 

You could also define ´mainstream´ as bands (or artists) that get played on the radio. 

Here there is an argument to be made about rock/metal not being mainstream, since rock and metal artists tend to not sell as many singles as pop artists. 

This then results in a lot of radio stations passing them over, since they tend to stick with playing the top 40 of the Hot 100 Chart.

 A lot of the experiemental musicians seem to have moved away from music that requires instruments. This, in turn, also mean a move away from rock and metal. 

There could be a varity of reasons for this, but one of the major ones is probably that instruments are extremely limited. A MacBook Pro wiith ProTools is just a lot more flexible.

Hmmm. I just don't see it as a mainstream band because there's plenty of people who don't know about them but might know about Drake or some other mainstream band or singer.

 

I think there's a difference of being mainstream among a certain genre. Sure Cage the Elephant is more so mainstream of the Rock genre but is it mainstream to the sense that those Hot 100 artist are. 

I think more people probably know about artist/band like Sia, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Beyonce, Maroon5, Adele or Justin Bieber than they do about Cage the Elephant.

Though not bashing on Sia or Rihanna they both have some good songs too but they've gotten way more attention in the public eye than Cage the Elephant has. Which is probably how I define mainstream.

But judging from the sale figures of Cage the Elephant's albums, plenty of people do know about them. 

I would also argue that a lot people might not know the band's name, but a lot of people would probably recognize atleast one of their songs (especially No Rest for the Wiicked).

 

As I said, it all depends on how you define ´mainstream´.

You just so happen to define it in a different way than I do. And your definition is just as valid as mine, eventhough they lead to different results. 

 

Since you like Cage the Elephant, have you ever listened to The Libertines? 

They're a bit more punk oriented than Cage the Elephant, but overall they sound quite alike.

'Non mainstream' covers a LOT more than just rock/metal. I don't listen to metal/hardcore as much as I used to, but this is some of the stuff I was into:
