High 980ti temps

Hey,

 

I got a set of 980ti's recently and it seems that they run super hot. When idling they are at 65C with 0-5% usage. What the f. I've got good case airflow with two 140mm fans blowing the cool air directly to the back of the cards (they are reference ones). Furthermore I've got 3x120mm fans blowing air on top of them. I've got two exhausts and a CPU on an AIO with heat going straight out from the case. When gaming the fans goes to 90%+ an the cards stay at 85C.

Reference cards are known to run extremely hot due to the poor cooling solutions on them.

still dont you think thats abit too hot for idle? even them cards should only idle at around 35-40c.

Peak temps are fine, but what is the fan speed at idle? might want to check the fan curve

Yeah but still, should be like low-mid 80's on load, and 100% shouldn't be 65 on idle! 

 

I can only assume it's due to them being in SLI (You said you a set right?) That would raise the temps, but still seems a little high

 

I assume you've already checked something like gpuz to see what % the fans are spinning at load and at idle? 

 

Other than that not sure what you could try :/

Dude 65C under no load in a room that's 25C ambient? Odd.

My reference ran at ~ 30c idle. Granted that was 1 card but 2 should never be that high. Something is definitely wrong.

Edit: make sure your fans are running.

just read a thread on another forum with people saying there evga 980tis idling at 62c, i wonder if its a heatpipe issue.

check the control panel and see what your power plan thing is at, also check on nvidia change them and then restart your computer

Nothing wrong with those idle temps if you've got a card with fans that don't spin up unless there's excess heat or under load.

Return them. It's not natural.

65 on Idle shouldn't be happening in any case.

Multi monitor perhaps? The ol' nvidia-doesn't-want-to-downclock-during-multi-screen-issue that's been arround since...forever.

 

Try downloading nvidia inspector and use the multi-display power saving option to force them to P8-P12. And also make sure the fans aren't 0% @ idle.

Do you have a high refresh rate monitor by any chance?

Weird, both my cards in SLI average 28-32 on idle.  But Lays points out something I have read before.

It's prob that it's a 4k display, try to change res to 1080p or 1440p and see if temps go down

Okay, I've managed to figure out what was going on. The card were running so hot because they were not downclocking to the lowest speed. They should have been on 135Mhz but the top card was at 565Mhz and the second one on 1000Mhz- this was due to having "prefer maximum performance" in Nvidia control panel. After changing that do adaptive and doing a restart, they now hover at 135Mhz/145Mhz with 40C/33C :) I am a happy man now! This is the solution if you have the same problem.

My Zotac 980Ti amp! extreme is 72° max in Firestrike and 65° max in witcher 3 with tweak ini ultrax2.
