390X benchmarks from the guy that unboxed it

Tiber1337

No, they should have not rebranded their entire series.

They didn't have the money for a new line of chips, so it was this or nothing. No in-between.

Keep the fakes coming  :)IkkAVNu.png

The R9 390X is a rebranded R9 290X. I used to got a R9 270X which came out on 2013 but because it is a 7870 rebrand it says on my screen that the R9 270X was release on 2012 because its a rebrand of a 2012 7870 GPU.

When I make a post, unless I am the original poster or ask for a reply, don't bother replying or quoting me because I don't read them.

it is a bad thing, especially if they want to compete with the likes of 970 and 980. Here in my country electricity matters, a lot. people are already shying away from AMD here, and  I don't think another 250 watt card will save them.

If you can't afford to pay electricity for a rig to run

You should not have a rig in the first place

it's not about the ability to afford the electricity in the first place, it's about saving money where it counts. if you can be efficient in your expenses, why not?

But nobody pushes you to buy AMD, and there are other choices

Also, computer power consumption is negligible, difference between the least efficient card and the most efficient card is probably 5bucks a month

I had a 280x loved it. don't get me wrong, I love AMD GPU's, I've used them for years now, my last one being the 280x. it's just that they are not as competitive as they were back in 2013, and this rebranding is killing their sales here in Indonesia. practically no seller here recommends an amd card for budgets above $200.

I mean It's not like he cannot change the Value on HTML page showing results and value in memory to show the name e.t.c of GPU in the benchmark software.

Because then they would sell even fewer cards by retaining the already aging 200 series and AMD needs every dollar they can get these days.

Just like they renamed a bunch of 7000 series cards as 200 series and sold a bunch, they need to do the same again with 300. Yeah, some are now 3 generations old. It's not ideal, but they don't have much of a choice.

That certainly gave a nice boost to 290 sales, yeah. But they wouldn't have sold nearly as many 200 series cards (I'm talking about all of them) if they retained the old 7000 series naming.

It's psychological marketing. New name implies new card, even if it's mostly the same as before.

maybe you wanted to say 280X cards, that's what they sold in bundles - the price was great

but, the difference with that is the 280X was 200$ cheaper (!!!!!) than it's counterpart HD7970 - comparing MSRP prices -> 499$ vs 299$

If I remember correctly, the 290's were the crypto king crunchers that had the crazy price hike because everyone wanted them...

Comparing launch prices isn't exactly relevant because you're looking at a past snapshot in time, where the economy and market was in a different state. Don't forget, the 7970 was AMD's top card at the time, so naturally it would have been more expensive back then. Over time prices drop as we've seen over and over. IMO, it makes more sense to compare current prices with relative performance.

I understand what you're saying - that they shouldn't sell rebranded cards at higher prices than the previous gen, and I agree. I think the 390X should be going for $349 to 399 at the absolute most. 390 should be $299. This would undercut the 970 as that seems to be the main target of the 390/X (which it does out perform in many cases). The 980 is all on it's own in the void between the top-end cards and the "next best thing". Though I believe AMD will release cut down Fury variants at lower prices to compete with the 980.

Well, we'll find out soon enough anyways. ;)

Costs for making a new GPU architecture >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the cost to rebrand. In fact, due to the price hikes, this will make them money in the short term (and is likely why they're trying to hide this from reviewers).

Most likely, it started out as something for OEMs, like the 8000 series. Once they realized they'd have nothing this year, they decided to do it for retail too. The average consumer isn't going to know that they're rebrands, but they will know that Nvidia has a new series out while AMD is still using their series from 2013. It's scummy, but that's how it is. (And considering the stuff you'll defend Nvidia for, it'll be hypocritical of you to complain.) Besides, we don't know if there will be new features at the vBIOS level.

OC3D claims that they have confirmed it's the exact same chip as a 290x

Might wanna update the OP

I was really hoping it wasn't going to be a rebrand. But it is looking more and more likely that it is just a 290X with more VRAM. :(
