Digital Foundry Makes A Case For 30Fps

  • To be clear 60fps is the better option when possible.

  • “In a wealth of scenarios, limiting frame-rate can result in a markedly smoother gameplay experience.”

  • Most PC games offer no frame limiter. Only a vsync option, which when unused can lead to tearing.

  • 30fps is used as it is a factor of 60fps. Using 40/45 fps would mean frames would stay on for uneven amounts of time.

  • Combining 30fps with motion blur results in good consistent presentation.

  • Reasons for 30fps in games:

    • Your PC/hardware is not powerful enough

    • You have extreme resolution

    • Some games can be CPU bound, poorly optimized, or both.

  • Reasons 30fps isn’t used on PCs:

    • Very few games actually feature frame-rate limiting options.

    • In some cases, you get your 30fps, but frames are delivered in an uneven manner, arriving at 16ms, 33ms or 50ms intervals, producing obvious judder.

  • Project will occupy 116 year old abandoned trolley terminal.

  • Street level solar collectors would be used to filter the sun down 20 feet.

  • This is only one part of a revitalisation project.

  • Dan Barasch co-founded the non-profit Lowline project with designer James Ramsey, a former NASA engineer.

  • The park is expected to cost about $60 million in mostly private funds, plus some government money. More than $1 million has been raised for research and design.

  • Several high-tech companies already have used systems to funnel natural illumination to previously light-inaccessible areas.

  • Kerri Culhane, associate director of Two Bridges Neighbourhood Council, calls the project a “Trojan Horse” that will draw real estate investors while alienating longtime residents.

  • CEO Randall Stephenson implied it could be two or three years before AT&T starts investing again in fiber optic network rollouts to potentially 100 cities.

  • Stephenson - “Obama proposals to the FCC would cause AT&T to "pause" its planned rollouts so it could gain clarity on what actions might occur.

  • Obama’s proposal is that companies that operate as ISPs would be subject to strict regulation under Title II of the Telecommunications Act.

  • "We're making these investments [in fiber optic rollouts] that are long-term investments," Stephenson said. "And we have to ask under what rules will those be regulated in two or three years. Until we have some clarity, we'll have to slow ourselves down and we'll have to pause and have some idea of what these rules look like in two or three years."

  • Stephenson said in the Fox interview that the delays apply to fiber optic rollouts except for those part of a pending agreement to buy DirecTV.

  • North Korea has refused to deny involvement in a cyber-attack on Sony Pictures that came ahead of the release of a film about leader Kim Jong-un.

  • Sony’s computers were attacked and unreleased films made available on the internet.

  • In the movie ‘The Interview’, Seth Rogen and James Franco play two reporters who are granted an audience with Kim Jong-un. The CIA then enlists the pair to assassinate him.

  • North Korea described the film as an act of war and an "undisguised sponsoring of terrorism", and called on the US and the UN to block it.

  • The film about North Korea does not appear to have been leaked.

The Tech That Drives The New Tesla Model S

[8:1] Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Fordpower

[8:2] Source 2: gizmodo.com.au

  • Additional front motor develops 221 bhp, taking the car’s total power up to a supercar-like 691 bhp.

  • Combined torque is even more impressive at 931Nm, growing from 362Nm.

  • Weighs: 2239kg

  • The new Dodge Challenger Hellcat makes 707bhp, 881Nm and weighs 2018kg.

  • The Tesla is faster to accelerate, reaching 100km/h in 3.2 seconds to the Hellcat’s 3.7-second time but has a max speed of 250kmph, compared to the Dodge’s 328kmph.

  • Both motors are controlled separately to increase control.

  • Musk says that Tesla is still five to six years away from a true, self-driving car.

  • Tesla has fitted all new Model Ss with a sophisticated array of sensors intended to better inform the driver of conditions around the car and which can take some limited control to avoid crashes.

  • The autopilot system uses a long range radar, image recognition camera, 360 ultrasonic radar and GPS data integration with real time traffic.

  • Autopilot is capable of checking blind spots, then switching lanes when it’s safe to do so itself if you’ve activated the turn signal while on the highway. It can also auto-brake if it detects traffic is slowing or stopping ahead or if a hazard suddenly appears.

  • Musk says the sophistication of these abilities will be developed over the next few years through software updates that will roll out to all models equipped with Autopilot sensor hardware

What struck me was the top comment in the swiftkey blog (Source 4). - Dominic

  • He has worked with Intel since 1997 on the assistive computer system he relies on to speak and create documents.

  • Hawking isn't interested in new tech like eye-tracking, but he and Intel recently decided to bring his current text and voice system up-to-date.

  • They ended up getting an assist from a company more familiar to smartphone users -- SwiftKey.

  • Intel recoded the system from scratch, with a key contribution coming from predictive keyboard maker SwiftKey.

  • Intel also refined his workflow by creating contextual menus for documents or emails to improve ease-of-use. Hawking has been testing it for a few months, and when it's done, Intel plans to make it available to the open source community.

Obama To Provide Funding For Police Body Cameras

[12:1] Source 1: linustechtips.com OP: Tech Dreamer

Source 2: theverge.com

n.b. Great write up in source 1.

  • It's now promising up to $263 million in matched funding for law enforcement agencies that want to buy body cameras for their officers.

  • $75 million of the fund is for purchasing the cameras themselves (up to 50,000 of them)

  • The cameras were a frequent demand since the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager killed by the police in Ferguson.

  • the rest is devoted to storage, training and outreach programs meant to renew the level of trust between cops and the communities they serve.

  • 50,000 cameras will cover only a fraction of the more than 750,000 police officers currently employed in America.

Not sure what they have against Swype input.  I use it almost exclusively and it works great.

Majorly @Slick but I guess somewhat to Linus, why don't you like Swype? This isn't a critique as much as an honest question. I am a man with stubby fingers and typing on the phone keyboards has always appeared more inconvenient than just using the swype functionality especially when you consider one handed use. I am a fairly avid smartphone user and just curious as to anything that could make my experience better.

The award fits...

I think I agree with it being more natural.

I see it more of a quick view of someones game.

It is so easy to just say hey buddy come check out this awesome thing i'm doing.

What? I want to see! So we just click watch and come see what is going on.

If a glitch or just casual gameplay that is goin on. I'm rarely gonna exit the game, turn on ShadowPlay Twitch Stream, then send them the link, then get back into the game just to show them something for a minute or two.

Linus you should review the Tesla(if they would let you) then you could 'trade in your lambo' LOL
