GTX 970 Blower Coolers (EVGA & PNY)

So does anyone know what heatsink exactly EVGA and PNY are using for their blower GTX 970 cards ?

If they're using the same "custom" non Nvidia heatsinks they used for the 770 then that spells trouble, those cards were hot and loud.
I'm interested because I'm contemplating SLI.

well, i saw that the gtx670 EK waterblock can be used on a ref 970 so its probably the same as on the 760 (cause the 760 is the same as the 670).

That's really bad news. Looks like open air coolers are the only way to go for on the 970.

wtf is that

The reference 970 cooler is too expensive so no one bothered to put it on actual 970s. Instead they're using "custom" blower coolers, basically ripping them off GTX 670s and 760s. Those were truly horrible, ran hot and loud.

The 760 is not a 670 why do people even think that.

I think he was talking about the cooler & the PCB. It's the same reference cooler & PCB for the 670 and 760.

Unfortunately, there wasnt a reference 970 even at launch and according to Tom's its unlikely that there will be one.

I hope there would be decent blower style 970s. Someone should do a teardown and review of these.

On the Amazon pic of the 970 it shows that the back end of the card (rear vent and I/O) there appears to be a fin stack present.

I have seen them too but even at Nvidia's launch there was no 970 with their reference cooler.

Trusted sites such as Bit-Tech, Tom's and TPU says there will be no such cards released to the public

Aww...

Then I won't get a 970.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just wanted to give you guys a heads up:

Looks like I will be ordering an EVGA GTX 970 superclocked with the blower cooler (pic in first post) as soon as newegg restocks them.

I have a small mini-ITX gaming system (Fractal node 304) and I don't mind having a little bit louder running card that blows all the hot air out the back to keep things cool inside the case. It's a reasonable compromise IMO, plus this is the SC version, so it's a little faster out of the box (1279mhz boost) and should still OC to at least 1350-1400 like child's play.

But anyways, as soon as I get the card, the first thing I'm going to do is remove the blower shroud to see what the cooler block/fins look like inside. I'll take pics and a video to show what it looks like and how it sounds and post up a new thread. There is almost no info on these blower cards, but they do have their applications and I know people want to know what's under the hood. I don't mind being the one to test it and share the info. :)

If I find it runs too hot and or too loud for my taste, I'll just exchange it for the same card but with the ACX 2.0 cooler.

A friend of mine has always run blower cards (Nvidia) and I don't ever recall hearing his systems running loud while gaming. He has a GTX 680 right now and it's whisper-quiet, so I'm crossing my fingers with this one...

The EVGA cooler is from their 770 with the label changed. The Galax one is the stock 670 cooler which is a cheaper version of the stock 680 cooler.
