I've spent around 1500$ on my build and I'm still getting pathetic performance. Help me build a better one.

As others have said look at used i7-8700k's or a 9700k, with the 9700k you will need to update your bios prior to installing the 9th gen CPU, but that would add a decent performance boost. A used 8700k will likely be the better deal as it is older but they are very capable CPU's, I love my 8700k system!

 

Otherwise the NVME drives I suggested in your other post would be a huge performance lift, overall system 'snappiness' and feel of responsiveness will greatly improve.

Is this your only drive? Not having an SSD will drastically lower the speed of your computer in most tasks (not game fps though). Load times into Windows, into games, etc. would be much worse.

Getting an SSD (like the ones I suggested in your other thread) and installing Windows on that would already improve the general snappiness of your PC.

Although, I would have to ask you to doublecheck what drive(s) you have. The WD Black are always 7200RPM drives, while WD Blue drives can be 5400RPM at 1TB. So doublecheck it's a Blue/Black and while you're at it, double check if you don't have an SSD too.

16GB at 3200Mhz will be plenty. But the 8GB 2400Mhz wouldn't hinder performance a ton either.

Getting an SSD (assuming you don't have one) would be the most important step 1. I especially recommend the Kingston A2000.

Other than that, I could only make suggestions on what to change/upgrade/optimize if I know a bit more about the issues you're facing with the system.

I'm sorry if my question had misled you. I meant 1500 for the whole thing. Including the 400$ monitor. The case fans, the rgb strips even the peripherals.

By pathetic I mean when I play games. It doesn't stutter for all of them. But it does for some. And for some applications it just drops frames like crazy.

Apart from that, When I code (I'm a newbie software engineer), even the cursor lags sometimes. 

These are just some of the examples i have in mind right now. But you get the idea. Plus I'm based in India. Tech is expensive here. A 1000$ iphone in the US is 1500$ here.

As far as performance goes, number 1 thing, you need an SSD. A 5400 RPM drive for boot, games, etc, is totally unacceptable in todays day and age. That wasn't acceptable in 2012.....

 

Get a 1 TB SSD for windows and your main games, you can find them for under 100 bucks. Samsung 840 evo, Samsung 840 qvo, WD Blue, ADATA, plenty of options.

 

GPU is rather meh, its "fine", but its not very powerful.

 

CPU, same boat. Its certainly not a powerhouse, but with that GPU, its fine.

 

As far as an FPS increase goes, GPU will be your number 1 upgrade here. As far as your PC feeling totally slow, SSD is what you need.

I agree with an 8700k. But I wouldn't go for a 5 GHz OC on that mobo, its VRM is not good enough. A lot of Z370 boards VRM's just sorta suck. They can run a 8700k fine at stock, which is honestly fine for gaming, but I wouldn't push a 5 GHz all core turbo on that mobo. I would shoot for, at best, a all core 4.7 GHz turbo, and hopefully the 8700k you get can do it at sub 1.275 ish vcore... I had an 8700k do 5 GHz all core at 1.300v, but I wouldn't push that much speed or vcore through his VRM...

This............... that drive is a huge problem. Literally an SSD alone will completely change the machine from a slow pile of poo to a 2020 PC. And, also, yea I hope you didn't spend 1500 on that, maybe 1100 with the monitor...

Noted. I'll get a good ssd. Although it won't certainly be as cheap as 100$ here. More like 250.

Graphic performace is...okay!!

i get about a good 120-130hx average. But I'm just irritated with the speed. And the compilation time when i code.

Well, doesnt matter what the sticker name is, what matters is how good the PSU is, and its a lot easier to figure those things out on more wellknown units. 

 

But in the end, god with good units. Would be nice to have clear internal shots of your PSU to figure out what it is.

Can you rotate the CPU cooler 90 degrees so it's inline with the exhaust? Not that it matters THAT much, but my OCD is going crazy. It's all I see in those pictures.

 

You should be much happier with a decent SSD in there. Make sure it has a cache.

The 8400 isn't great but it's not going to cause huge issues here, you're running the memory in single channel with 1x8gb. The 2x8gb memory will be a good improvement, don't forget to enable XMP to get the advertised speeds instead of stock DDR4 speeds that are slower than good DDR3.

 

The PSU is probably okay, I would consider making a thread on it in the psu forum and see if anyone can identify it as a bomb or not although someone here might figure that out. There's only a handful of psu manufacturers, it shouldn't be too hard to identify it's platform so you can look up reviews of better known psu's on the same platform as they'll likely perform about the same.

 

What you really need is a decent ssd though, well actually not even decent literally anything that doesn't spin will perform better than a hard drive. Ideally you look for anything with a DRAM cache, if possible grab an nvme. m.2 sata or standard sata is perfectly fine as well but a decent nvme would really make a massive difference from a hard drive.

 

If you're still having issues after using dual channel memory and adding an ssd. You might have to look at a cpu upgrade but IMO unless you can find a cheap 8700/8700k you'd be far better off selling it and getting 10th/11th gen Intel or Ryzen 4000 instead of paying similar money for a used cpu for a low end board.

Vertical exhaust is fine, in cases with a top fan and plenty of ventilation like the Antec 900 often it could be a better orientation.

The PSU is probably okay, I would consider making a thread on it in the psu forum and see if anyone can identify it as a bomb or not although someone here might figure that out. There's only a handful of psu manufacturers, it shouldn't be too hard to identify it's platform so you can look up reviews of better known psu's on the same platform as they'll likely perform about the same.

 

What you really need is a decent ssd though, well actually not even decent literally anything that doesn't spin will perform better than a hard drive. Ideally you look for anything with a DRAM cache, if possible grab an nvme. m.2 sata or standard sata is perfectly fine as well but a decent nvme would really make a massive difference from a hard drive.

 

If you're still having issues after using dual channel memory and adding an ssd. You might have to look at a cpu upgrade but IMO unless you can find a cheap 8700/8700k you'd be far better off selling it and getting 10th/11th gen Intel or Ryzen 4000 instead of paying similar money for a used cpu for a low end board.

Because it costs what an SSD should.

 

SSDs arent that expencive, you can get 1TB models for 100-130$ or equivelent currency in large parts of the world.

Well i wouldnt stick a "probably" to that unless you somehow caught the topology used. 

 

Internals shots would help determine that, but i doubt OP wants to pull out the PSU for a photoshoot.

If that's 3/4ths the price of everything else, yeah that's probably what you want then provided you're only comparing against 500gb~ drives. It's not a bad drive and has a dram cache, it's not a top tier drive but that's fine.

 

I usually send people this but sometimes it's a little overwhelming, the A2000 seems to be recommended at the mid-range so I'd say go for it if you've confirmed that it's a good deal for your region/market.
