I don't touch Exchange with a 40ft pole anymore, as managing email servers is far too expensive in terms of cost for my IT clients and sanity for my own brain. Now a days I get everyone over to hosted email providers such as Office 365 or G Suite because it's far easier to manage & more familiar for users who are already using Hotmail or Gmail.

Doing a quick Google search for the error shown in your stacktrace ("could not find a directory entry for the server") reveals this not to be a problem with Exchange specifically, as it appears to be related to user groups or permissions within Windows. And yes, I realize the link I'm giving you is for Exchange 2007, however, this error can apply to any version of Exchange so the exact version may not matter. Best of luck!

Hey mate,

So as stated above, this is most likely a group issue.  But since it looks like a few lines of code are actually showing in the error, this may indicate an issue with a function in code, and might be worth sending to Microsoft at least just for good will.

My best questions to you would be:

  1. What are you trying to achieve?  - this is more in the aspect, are you trying to do this as a lab for yourself, just setting up a mail server for lulz (good experience) or do you want to actually run an Exchange server for clients?  If so, please tell me this is on a non-production server.
  2. What existing roles do you have on this server? - does this server function as a domain controller? RDS Gateway? Hyper-V Server? DFS Server? Are you trying to upgrade an existing version of Exchange server???
  3. What is the platform this server is running on? - Is this server a virtual machine?  If so, on what hypervisor? ESX, Hyper-V, KVM, Virtualbox?
  4. If you are setting this up within an organisation - Is the PC domain connected? what OU is the machine located in? Do you know what policies are currently affecting the machine? Do any of these interfere with the installation/function of Exchange Server.

Just some food for thought, let us know what you know and we'll work with what we work with.

LTT has some pretty big smart minds, so even if I'm not able to help I'm sure someone else will :) Cheers bro.

A couple of things you could check;

Things I would look for;

1) Exchange Setup Logs. There is a log file generated in a folder on the C:\ that will have detailed information as to why you may be having an issue.

2) Make sure that you are installing the latest RU of Exchange Server. You can download this direct from Microsoft.

3) Make sure that the version of Windows you are installing on is up to date.

4) Without knowing more about the environment its hard to troubleshoot further. There are a number of variables that can impact the successful install of Exchange Server.

Exchange Setup will not allow you to get to that point of the install is at without those pre-reqs in place. Having installed Exchange numerous times its quite demanding about the pre-reqs.
