Budget camera for some up close photography

Wondering what cameras make sense around the $50 price point, I'd stretch it to $75 if there's something great for the price.

 

My roomate likes to photograph miniatures, and his phone camera is just terrible for it. If there's something affordable that would do better than the camera on a Galaxy j7, what would be some suggestions?

What's the limit with the J7? How big are the miniatures? I'm wondering if an optical adjustment to the J7 will suffice e.g. if you need to focus closer than it does.

I considered that but the color of the photos is not so great. Comparing to my own note 8 (which is a bit unfair I know) the overall picture quality, not just focus, is pretty crap, so I have ruled out clip on lenses.

You can buy lenses that you can stick onto the phone. That's probably your best bet in that price range.
You could also look into some used cameras like the S90, S95 etc but I'm not sure they'd really get that much closer.

If he had a larger budget you could easily get an older DSLR and a macro lens. Depends how into it he really is.

On a smaller budget a used short prime (like a 24, 35 or 50 1.8) and an extension tube would probably be a more money-efficient alternative to get close to 1:1.

i have the j7 (i spend all my money on camera equipment) and the camera is just TERRIBLE, picking up literally any point and shoot camera would be an improvement. idk about lenses for the camera tho
