[EOL] PSU Tier List rev. 14.8

Message added by Spotty

For help choosing a power supply please Create a New Thread asking for assistance including your budget and system hardware to receive the best answers relevant to your specific needs.

@LukeSavenije

Any dirt on this unit?

http://www.rampage.com.tr/en/product/rampage-rmp-700-80p-700w-80-plus-12cm-fan-active-pfc-power-supply

A user bought it thinking it'd solve their random reboot problems using a Xigmatek X-Power 500W. It didn't, but all info about this PSU is in Turkish so it's hard to track it down.

Here's a load test that doesn't help much

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

Computer having a hard time powering on? Troubleshoot it with this guide. (Currently looking for suggestions to update it into the context of <current year> and make it its own thread)

Double forward, group regulated, minimum input voltage of 180V.

Pretty much the same garbage as his Xigmatek, only slightly more efficient.

I figured as much. A bummer since OP didn't listen/wait and just bought the other crappy unit he had available lol

Probably isn't the PSU either.

Make sure he has "automatically restart" unchecked in system properties.

So a SilverStone ST-ET750-B 750 watt psu wouldn't be good enough for a 5900x en rtx 3080 build according to this list?

It wouldn't be wise to use such a cheaply made PSU for high-end and expensive tech.

So if it's cheaper it can't have quality parts inside of it according to your logic?

Brand =/= quality either. Had this discussion multiple times in this thread. Brand's have both good, bad, and mediocre PSUs, like the Cooler Master V Platinum, the Cooler Master Elite and Cooler Master MWE V2 Bronze respectively. That PSU you are looking at (from what I can tell) is group-regulated, which isn't something that is good for anything other than budget builds/office PCs

Just look at two things in the list:

  • How Silverstone has units in literally every tier, besides tier E (but even including low priority subtiers).
  • The fact that Strider Essential ET-B is in Tier D, which is only recommended for low-end systems and never to such a high-end PC. It's not a good idea to pair a $700 GPU and a $550 CPU with a low-end PSU. Anyone buying a 5900X and a RTX3080 has $100 or maybe even more for a high-end PSU.

If you think that being in Tier D tells you nothing, you have all the methodology and the sources in the tier list's spreadsheet.

Silverstone doesn't make the PSUs, so even if that were true, it doesn't mean anything.

Well from what i could find it based on mid-range platform cwt parts ...which shouldnt be bad quality at all then.

Those sources dont have any real reviews for the newer Strider Essential psu's  so it's then weird thats it listed on D tier, from the reviews there are they come out good , like this one : https://bit-tech.net/reviews/tech/psus/silverstone-essential-gold-750w-review/1/ , why wouldnt you use it then a gaming rig, why have 4x 8pins that can give decent voltage with ok ripple but only use it on low end systems? Then you don't need 750w and 600v on 12 volt line...?

ET-HG is Tier B, the ET-B is a completely different model.

Well you find me a review on the ET-B model then as there is none where i looked in the spreadsheet from where those tiers are build upon, and from the older models the bronze models seem fine..

How about you use a PSU with reviews instead of relying on blind faith with a brand. Also old versions doesn't mean that the newer ones will be better.

It's not a bomb.

But it's double forward and doesn't even have DC to DC for the +3.3V and +5V, so why even bother?

Well, the double forward means it might not hold up to the high transient spikes of the new 30xx cards.  I haven't seen any tests with that particular PSU, but all of the other double forward PSUs I've seen do not like the new cards.

And the lack of DC to DC means that you don't get 98%+ of your +12V on your +12V rail.  So while it's a "750W", you're only getting the same amount of power as a good 700W.

It's just not a good value unless you were using a lower end graphics card.

Well...bought a RM850x for a little extra headroom and to get a better overall unit than what I had (and am back on right now). It lasted 2 days before completely dying... Thankfully, everything else in my system seems fine, but I'm back to square one and also a bit sketched out even though I recognize it was just bad luck.

Ryzen 3900x (probably going 5900x, unless I blow my budget on a PSU haha), RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra, x570 Tomahawk.

Thinking maybe Seasonic Prime TX850 or TX1000, though would really rather not spend that much. I would prefer one with flat cables to the extent possible and preferably 3xPCI-E 8pin single cables rather than dual headed, but that part I may be willing to compromise on if necessary. I was looking at the Focus GX-850, but I've seen people mention that it trips on 3080s, is that true of the newer models as well?

Really?

Well.. you could just RMA it and try again.  Failure rate on those is like .01%.
