Is using a TV instead of a gaming monitor for PC gaming a cardinal sin?

In most cases a 42" inch 60hz 1080p TV is a big oof compared to a 24" 1080p 144hz gaming monitor but some people on here still decide to game it up like they're sitting in the first row of the movie theater staring up at the screen the whole time and it kind of worries me.

What do you guys think of it? Are you all for it or against it?

I used a 4k 60hz 55" tv once to do some couch gaming.....

 

Holy crap the input lag! Coming from my 24" 144hz 1ms GTG VG248QE monitor was night and day when it came too responsiveness. Perfectly fine for casual non shooter games, but anything FPS, RTS or something that needs you to have reflexes it's best to have a monitor (Until TV's catch up in response times)

It really depends on the input lag. Even for single player only titles with a slower pace like Minecraft or tomb raider, a small amount of input lag really ruins the experience for me. But if it has decent input lag, a TV is basically just a big monitor.

The input lags a big factor in my opinion as well but not only that, I can see for couch gaming with a controller and such if the input lag is minimal but I've seen people with like 42" plus TVs sitting up to it on their desk like it's a 24" monitor using mouse and keyboard and it blew me away that people can play like that.

In that case you have a lot of pixelation, assuming it's a 1080p monitor it has a significantly lower ppi which means you'd have to turn up anti aliasing to try and smooth edges which tanks performance.

I personally use LG 4K60hz monitors, even for games, so i may not be in the best position to answer this. So i recently built another pc to plug into my tv to game a little in bed, IMO its not like you're gonna be gaming competitively on the couch or in bed, so a TV is fine.

Yes, and also to note the colors are really off on TV compared to the colors you get on a monitor.  That is a nice draw back.  Add that along with the fact there will be input lag even if the TV is 240 motion rate or whatever motion tech your TV is.  The TV is 60hz but each company has its own way to make it feel like 120hz or 240hz with motion technology.  It will be smooth on TV, but the big draw backs like I said are that the colors are off and nice input lag however it will be butter smooth like a gaming monitor since TVs now are 240 motion rate tech and what not.
