I know there are good ones out there I just forget what ones are good

Just don't visit questionable sites. Having some free software won't really save you anyway if you catch something nasty.

Windows 10 and adblock installed on google chrome.

 

Grandmother's PC is spotless since I built it years ago.

 

Windows defender is good enough and isn't full of adware like pretty much every other AV is

Avast isnt bad. Ive even paid for it, just to give the Dev's some money. I find its not very intrusive. If your grandma runs Windows 10, the free built in AV is suppose to be good as well, though I can speak for it. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I personally use Avast (free), though I've also uninstalled almost all of the random garbage addons it comes with. (Menu -> Settings -> Performance -> Add/Modify Components, only leaving File Shield, Behavior Shield, and Mail Shield enabled. Might be good to leave Web Shield enabled for her too, but the rest is just a bunch of junk.)

I think defender is just as good as the rest if you want free.   It doesn't auto scan but you can set it up to auto backup certain folders and files to a onedrive account to help mitigate data loss in the case of a malware attack.  

 

Between that. a basic adblock and a regular (weekly/monthly)  MWB scan she should be right.

malwarebytes, bitdefender,kaspersky. all have good detection , but 2 of em require annoying registration popups..

Maybe it does.  I haven't really seen anything that says it does (but I haven't actually looked). I know you can't set a regular scan (in the GUI) but it does appear to do it at least weekly for me.

To me though, Microsoft's built-in AV software is good enough. Kaspersky & Bitdefender seems good, I've heard.
Not sure if this helps.

Its pretty hard to get a virus on win10 unless you are trying. Most of the time I run virus I have to spend several minutes everything off, like smart screen and the rest of it.

BitDefender imo. I've had more issues with Avast than it. Paid is better ofc, and even more setup and forget style than free.

According some of the articles I read, social engineering and phishing are the main avenues, downloading and installing dodgy software after that.
