Anyone Heard of this Brand?

piemadd

I have a friend that wants a server, (im not sure what the use is for) and he wants this PSU:

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2Vprxr/apevia-raptor-450-w-atx-power-supply-atx-rp450w

This immediate set off alarm bells in my head because:

  1. I've never even heard of Apevia.
  2. This isn't even 80+ (NOTHING)

It's a bomb already, but in a server, thats straight suicide. Could somebody confirm this for me?

Thank you!

Yeah... I really really REALLY would not do that myself, especially not in a server that is going to be running 24/7.

Show him the first review on Newegg, and if he tries to rationalize it then slap him in the face a couple of times until he wakes up.

Please NO don't get that

I'd get a FSP TWINS500 + 900VA UPS + 2 or 3 large powerbanks for redundancy and more than enough time to shutdown, or if you don't need it running 24/7 i'd get a SEASONIC PRIME ULTRA PLATINUM.

Sounds pretty sketchy. Don't recommend. Mini-redundant PSU's aren't really worth it unless you have 2 separate power sources like 2 UPS's. The failure of a unit in a redundant PSU under a home job operation isn't likely enough to be worth the cost. (Unless you're like me and you just want it for the fun of it)

Personally any well branded PSU like from Corsair or EVGA with some half decent 80+ rating should serve him just fine. My current servers have been running 24/7 for over a year on some Corsair PSU's and have had absolutely no issues (primarily because they're only under a constant ~15% load).

If you plan to be running the system under a much higher load (lest say 80%+ of the PSU maximum output) 100% of the time then a proper server PSU may suit him better. I will admit my knowledge in good brand server PSU's isn't great but I've been told Athena isn't bad. I've also heard about the brand Zippy but haven't looked into them very much.

Hopefully anything I just said will be of a little help.

Apevia used to be Aspire.  They had such a bad reputation, they had to change their name.  Unfortunately, they still produce poor products under the new name; in other words, nothing's changed.

Their biggest claim to fame is the X-QPack micro ATX cube case:  https://www.amazon.com/Apevia-Aspire-X-QPACK2-NW-BK-500-Computer/dp/B000VDZ35I/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
