There is no such thing as i5 8700k, its either i5 8600k or i7 8700k

For home (games) an i5 3570k running at 4.2Ghz. Also still running a 16:10 1680x1050 monitor...so very old in tech terms but I get 60fps in BF5 on a 1060 so it's more than okay for me.

 

For work a Xeon W-2125

i think youre assuming everyones got new-ish hardware. i run a 7700k and see no point in upgrading yet

you can sell those people anything. i bet he has all apple too and drive bmw or some shit. i sadly got a boss like that.

Yeah that's honestly one of the most stupid things I have head. You buy the CPU you can afford and for what you need. If I'm just going to game I don't need an i9 9900k no matter how much money I have to blow. It doesn't make sense for me to get anything more than an i7 8700k or Ryzen 2700x. You go for Intel i9s when your workload actually benefits and other times you go for Ryzen threadripper whe you'll benefit more. The two architects of the chips are so different from one another that certain programs may do better or worse when comparing chips.

He's the poor one. Z390 is a mainstream platform, made for the proletariat. The rich people use LGA3647 or SP3, with CPUs like the 3175X and 64 core Epycs.
