  1. 1. What is the best laptop? All are the same price due to student discounts

    • Lg gram 13Z980
      3
    • Dell XPS
      6
    • Surface Laptop 2
      1

Hi,

I am planning to get a new laptop.

I am a student and get discounts.

All the laptops cost about the same for me.

The specific gram is the LG GRAM 13Z980,

The XPS is the

XPS 13 9370

And the surface is the 2nd gen. I5 8250u 8 GB ram.

They all have 256Gb ssds, 8gb ram and the same i5 8250u.

So, vote and put why as a comment.

Thanks

Chromebook is the best student laptop. Shouldn't need to run games, just study materials.

I know people hate on them but they just for the most part work.

ive got a 2013 mac air (ive got too many laptops) and it get used by all the family and still is good today.

but out of those the XPS is the best choice. though i must admit the keyboard is a little cramp.

I'd have to disagree, if you need to do anything that isn't web based you're toast on Chrome OS.

Of those 3 I'd prefer either the XPS or Gram, just because the Surface Laptop doesn't have USB-C.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't tend to use ports at all.

The XPS seems to just have something that everyone loves, but I can't tell.

The discount still puts it £200 more than what I can afford.

3:2. Sounds amazing.

Do you know what the love of the XPS is about?

And will the fabric on the surface last in your opinion?

Thanks

its the same stuff they use in cars. so yes it will last. might get some usage marks over the years. though you get that on most stuff.

its the fact its a near perfect laptop with not to many gripes around it. its overall a solid device. some complain a bit over its size saying it "feels" small. other than that its a damn fine laptop

But the 3:2 of surface wins?

Am genuinely interested.

the only issue with the surface is IO. maybe a slightly larger trackpad but its better than the XPS.

IO is the only thing that isnt up to par on the Surface. which is what the the Matebook fixes, plus the matebook has a slightly larger trackpad.

Got that impression, thanks. Not a concern for me, so I guess I will get it.

Really depends on the program the student is studying. In my program all three of those would be borderline unusable. I would check with your school and teachers if possible to see if you will have any special requirements.

Surfaces are recommended by my school.

For exams we are given a (hopefully good) laptop.

If that is the recommendation by the school, then there really isnt anything specifically special about the surface. I would choose a more consumer friendly thin and light. Preferably something with user upgradable ram and storage. Also make sure that the keyboard and screen fit your personal preferences. I love the lenovo yoga 730 and 930 for thin and lights, I cannot get used to the weird keyboard layout, therefore I honestly cant use them. I use a 10 key everyday, therefore it doesnt make sense for me to look at a keyboard or laptop without one. etc.

I want to use it for at least 3 years. I am having trouble filtering out people who abuse their computers online and people who wore it by just using it.

I don't want to have it be bad after a year...

But also don't want to rest my hands on pure metal, like the gram.

I guess the XPS will last the longest and not sacrifice quality.

Actually, you can get a cheaper (than XPS 13) yet decent Ultrabook - eg Yoga 730 13. Don't have to spend so much tbh

If you're talking about reliability, only premium business laptop can guarantee this more

just about the best laptop on the market.

edit: hence me not voting. while the Surface takes a close second. it just doesnt beat the matebook.

Thinking about it, the surface has questionable durability. The XPS has no touch and only FHD.

My only concern with the matebook is the metal arm rest. Is it comfortable, or just cold?

I don't mind it looking like a Mac if I get a dbrand skin.

I'm speaking relatively. Relative to the surface, the XPS seems a lot more durable.

Its aluminium so it should go to ambient or hand temp quickly

The first surface products were "meh" in terms of durability. It should be good with the later gens

But  so can the surface. On top of possible QC issues, the surface is made out of fabric. Why Microsoft, why? I thought you targeted it at students?
