You can usually tell if it will work before you even attempt it. It's caused by modern solder being made from tin rather than lead. Lead was far more dense and more flexible. So what happens is over time the PCB expands and contracts with heat and due to the tin solder being quite brittle it then snaps at the contact point, breaking contact with the GPU core. The symptoms are lines down the screen, blocks, artefacts and more than likely crashing (with the driver stopped but then recovered message). If left long enough you won't be able to load a driver for the card at all. It's very rare for a card with this fault to be stone dead though, but I guess if the issue was bad enough it could stop booting all together.

The reason it is hit and miss is because the card could be dead for other reasons (failed components, bad memory, bad memory controller, failed MUX and so on. Baking does not making components work again.

I did a lot of research into this a few years ago and a professional reflow oven (yes they actually exist) is basically a small convection oven (with a fan in it to make sure the heat is even throughout the oven). The only area they truly differ from a regular fan oven is that they heat up slowly and then cool down slowly to prevent any distortion of the PCB or fast expansion/contraction which could break the solder contact all over again.

The only issue? the repair will never last. Sometimes it will limp on for a few months, sometimes merely a few hours. The problem is you have not fixed the problem, which is damaged/weakened solder and you have not replaced the flux (the acid/glue that makes the contacts stick).

So nice job OP and I hope it lasts as long as possible for you

It's a crowd-funded game. The most crowd-funded game in the history of crowdfunding, to be exact, with over 100 million dollars collected so far from over 1.2 million backers. It is still alpha. Some believe it will never be anything more, others vehemently disagree. I will not advertise it beyond that and rather leave it up to you to make up your own mind about it in case you're interested. If you decide to join the community, we're here to help with anything you need.

You can find more info on the game itself if you google for its website. We here tend to be a bit messy but there is quite a bit of information about it around this subforum as well.

The demo is, just remember if you dont want to watch the intro press alt+F4 as it comes on and it will go straight to the actual test.

Wow, I never knew that. I didn't think you could skip that intro since I figured the whole point of it was to heat your card up before the real test.

I don't think the gpu can really bottleneck the CPU, its just a matter of what you're doing isn't maxing out the cpu, but it is graphically intensive.

what game is that? if thats the new xcom, its known that its really badly optimized atm

its harder to switch everything around if you get the HDD first, the SSD is the better choice, plus he can puta few games on it and then when hes ready get an HDD which will be cheaper.

You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, however the way it runs and what it is, is expected for a big budget alpha (its not even really in alpha yet). If you played any big game at this stage in development you would find the same stuff, and for the scale they are doing this on its kind of impressive it even works.

technically the super hornet is the best but it's only available in sales, which happen every now and again. Right now we are in very early alpha, which basically means they are still adding everything into the game so what you have to do is: Arena commander which includes a free for all mode, a team battle mode, a capture the flag mode, a vs AI mode, a racing mode, and a free flight mode. on he universe side theres basically exploring to do, a few missions so far, killing other people for sport. They are set to add a bunch more stuff in the coming months but what we have right now is that. It's important to remember if you are playing now you shouldn't expect it to run like a finished game, because its definitely not.
