Viruses VS VirtualMachines

Go to solution Solved by Electronics Wizardy,

No it can't hurt your other system or acess other things on the network unless you let it.

Simple question: if you get a virus on a VM, can it get to your files/data/anything outside the VM?

Reasoning: I want to use project64 but it is loaded with viruses. if I download linux onto a VM, and then download project 64, will the viruses be able to affect my main system?

only if you have some connection between the VM and your local machine like open ports or whatnot

depends on the virus really

pretty sure you can find a virus somewhere capable of leeching into all network attached devices

Only thing that can potentially carry over to your physical system is some type of worm which will disperse itself through the network, so if there is no networking between the physical machine and the VM you're fine. Think of it as a completely different computer, that's exactly how the virus see's it
