Right, like I said, whole lotta room in that server to upgrade with. I'm just saying the Amazon price is a bad deal comparatively speaking.

There is a lot more to single thread speed than clock speed. These are all running pretty old chips. If you want good game server performance, id get something like a i7 10700 here. There also pretty cheap now, and much faster in single thread tasks.

Sorry, misread your question. I would prefer that as I could put it in the same place as my network setup.

if you can wait then wait but don't wait too long because there is a better than average chance that the june "release" is just the announcement that they are going to be making those GPUs and it will probably still be a few months to a year before they hit the shelves. and a lot of people have been having issues with the AMD 5700 series GPUs since their release where AMD is coming out with an updated patch about once a week as far as I can tell. the latest one is 20.2.2

Yea, there is never a system requirement for ECC. It’s just for “data integrity” sake. Nothing “requires it”.

And yea, im sure it will work on that. And if not, o well? Worth a try lol. All that will happen is it won’t instal/boot, but I see no reason why it wouldn’t.

As much as i liked Ryzen, currently no Ryzen motherboard supports ECC Reg, only Plain ECC which priced similar than a regular ram. Defeat the purpose of "for fun".

For fun, the out of date sandy bridge Xeon have it all. The cpu is cheap (can go up to 8core / 16 threads) & DDR3 ECC Reg is super cheap.

I like the new AMD stuff, but from a "mess around with server stuff for fun" I am not sold on it yet. I don't know the state of the drivers and such, and at this point "Intel just works". Not to say AMD can't be a great option, all AMD chips also support ECC which is bad ass! I just personally don't have the patients for working out weird microcode or driver issues with a new player like AMD. That said, maybe the concerns early Ryzen had are no longer issues. I just don't personally know.

And true, can always run that windows server dealio in a VM under ESXi ;). That would likely be most real world.

I.... would honestly not even run that. I would look into running ESXi as a hypervisor, and run VM's under that of your choosing. My homelab is like that, and its super fun and works great! Also, more potential to mess around with stuff since everything can be its own VM.

Anyways, to answer the actual question, a server will run on any old hardware. As my sig shows, my homelab is running on a i3 (i3's support ECC, if you want ECC but need more horsepower, a Xeon is your only other option on the intel side of things), but depending what your doing, I bet an i3 is plenty. I have never had issues with mine, and I run 4-5 ubuntu server VM's next to freenas....

So, being a CS student, I would look into something like this, it can give you a better understanding of rolling out VM's and could even roll your own ZFS server in Ubuntu or something (or arch, cuz arch lol). I run freenas since its well supported and I don't want to mess around with my storage, and that is a totally valid approach as well. Rolling your own can be fun, but for me its not worth the risk or hassle.

Anyways, yea. Thats my two cents. ESXi has a free version, most linux distros are free, and freenas is, you guessed it, free!

so a 50mm lens is nice in so much as it mimics the primary field of view of a human but as stated for video its a bit limiting.  your depth of field can be played with by increasing your aperture and adjusting the ISO and Shutter speed to compensate.

Invest in external audio it will always improve the quality of your work and will work with any new gear you get making it a great value buy.

If your doing Man on the Street interviews then invest in a light weight Tripod with a video head  if you don't have much experience Gimbals will only do so much to where a tripod will do wonders.

What you're looking for is a shotgun mic.
These are basically "point & shoot". As in, the direction of the "barrel" is where the sound will be picked up from.
So as long as you don't point it at the camera, & keep it out of the view of the camera.. you're good.

You could also use clothing mics (small mics that you clip on people's body) if you can throw the money at that.

Why did you get such an expensive kit without having my h experience in photo/video tho ?

You could easely have gotten something less expensive that would do just as fine.

I just googled "how many times the email was opened" and I got this in the first link.
So it is not a client, but a plugin inserting invisible "images" into emails to track them.

I've been down a very deep hole looking for the answer to this. Tried out many different email apps, and haven't found one that matches. I know it's probably gmail, but it really doesn't look like it. The reply buttons, and drop down on the top right is different than standard.

While watching a LTT video I saw something interesting. They were using an email client that shows them how many times the email was opened. Does anyone have any idea what software this is?

The 9900ks is a binned 9900k. They take the good chips off the production line and scribble an s on the end in order to sell at a [presumably] slightly higher price. Same principal behind the 8086K compared to the 8700k.

What are you going to be using the system for? Do you already have the Z370/Z390 motherboard?
New Ryzen CPUs launch 7th July. Could be worth waiting until then to see some independent reviews as to how the new Ryzen CPUs compare against the Intel stuff. We know for sure there will be a 12c/24t Ryzen CPU, with a 16c/32t expected and being discussed by motherboard manufacturers however not yet officially confirmed by AMD.

Because of the CPU manufacturing process, there's some variance in quality between the chips coming out of Intel's fabs. All of them on store shelves pass Intel's performance requirements, but some of the chips just barely passed those requirements and some of the chips aced them with flying colors. Where your particular chip falls into that spectrum is the silicon lottery.

9900ks is Intel taking some of those highest performance chips that aced the requirements (the "highest binned" ones) and selling them with a fancy name tag and probably a fancy price to go with it. They're going to be the very best 9900k CPUs on the market, but they're still 9900k CPUs.
