Maybe they're not going far enough? The real big brain move might just be to distribute software via Virtual Box Disk Image 🤯.

More choices is great but they need to have a purpose and direction.
I don’t think competition between OS is need as that just leads to compatibility issues.

elsandosgrande reacted to Nayr438 in lm-sensors: How to tell what sensors-detect did??
No, that would be entirely dependent on your cooling solution.
I am not sure what that is, but a search tells me that its just the kernel complaining about ownership. It can probably be ignored.
Adding "pcie_ports=dpc-native" to your kernel command-line may make that message disappear.
This isn't an error, it can be ignored.
Your missing the firmware file for your WiFi card. It's normally part of linux-firmware but your distro may be using a outdated pull.
You can try pulling the latest collection with
git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git cd linux-firmware sudo make install A kernel upgrade may or may not be necessary for full functionality however.

elsandosgrande got a reaction from Electronics Wizardy in Is it possible to update an operating system in the background?
That's the case with software decoding, but using VA-API for video playback reduces the load by quite a bit. I haven't done any extensive testing or looked into the details of it, so I'm probably at least partially mistaken, but I think that battery life tests use video playback because it kind of provides a baseline for light computer usage and because it's the easiest way to get the screen to not be static for a long time. Again, I might be at least partially mistaken, so please correct me if I am.

With macOS the best thing to do is actually use the OS. You can install macOS in a virtual machine, but that isn't a great way to really feel how the OS works as you'll be missing things like graphics acceleration (which is very important for macOS). If your company is willing to get you a Mac then definitely do that. Do you know how old the Macs are that you'll be supporting?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. You'll get used to it after the first run of maintenance. Might take a bit more time the first few times you deal with those systems, but your employer should understand that.

What? He left out more info because it's irrelevant, not because he's stupid.
You're still assuming what he's going to be doing in class, that it will need to be submitted as a compiled exe, and that OP can't run Windows in a VM or use some other program to compile/run exes on Mac.

Depends entirely on what you want in an operating system and whether you're referring to macOS the operating system or Mac the product. You mention programming etc..
Software engineers professionals around the world can and do use macOS for software development, and no, not just because they need Xcode to compile iOS apps. I'm a software engineer and I've used Macs for my work since 2013, I don't use Macs exclusively but I typically only use a Windows machine to play games I can't run in macOS or to support someone or test software with a Windows computer. I'd also consider myself a power user, I'm very familiar with both Windows and macOS and written drivers and software that targets both environments over the years.
All I can say is they are both very functional modern operating systems, macOS definitely has more polish and refinement than Windows, and as a technical person who seriously can't be bothered tinkering and fixing things when I'm not working, which is not often, I want a machine that just works for me and is a pleasure to use. I find this to be macOS personally because outside of my work I'm also a hobbyist photographer and musician, and the Windows driver model is a literal scrapheap for this kind of work.

Calm down, you don't even know what kind of programming he's doing. You're assuming everything he will do has to be compiled in a way that will run on Windows, and that OP will be completely unable to run said Windows program on his machine.
-
elsandosgrande reacted to exhaustedbrit in How is the MacOS compared to Windows?
What on earth are you talking about. This has nothing to do with Windows/Mac as operating systems and everything to do about simply using a compiler correctly.
-
elsandosgrande reacted to Oshino Shinobu in How is the MacOS compared to Windows?
We don't even know what type of programming OP's doing.
I also never recommended OP use either, just suggested that using a Windows VM could be a solution for any compatibility issues. Calm down.

elsandosgrande reacted to WhitetailAni in How is the MacOS compared to Windows?
macOS is substantially different from Windows.
Pros of Windows:
Easier to manipulate
Easier to manage files
More hidden but nice features
Pros of macOS:
Harder to mess up
Cleaner
Cons of Windows:
Easy to mess up
Regedit is dangerous
Cons of macOS/Macs:
VERY locked down
You can't easily screw your sister's Mac up so she has to pay you to fix it

elsandosgrande reacted to Nayr438 in Pop Os 20.04 not booting after system upgrade
GCN 1 and GCN 2 are both supported by both ATI/Radeon and AMDGPU. According the the image above linux-firmware was corrupt / missing files for AMDGPU. When it failed to load the correct firmware it fell back to ATI/Radeon more than likely. Refer to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#AMD
With that said, you should try reinstalling "linux-firmware", I think its "sudo apt install linux-firmware" but I could be wrong, I don't use Debian Based Distros.
Radeon is a legacy driver and you should be using AMDGPU instead, failure to move to AMDGPU could result in compatibility and performance issues.

Damn… That must be worse than even my previous laptop, which had an AMD dual-core Stoney Ridge APU clocked at 2.9GHz with a 3.5GHz boost mother's AMD dual-core laptop from 2014 clocked at 1.35GHz (that thing is so slow, especially on Windows 10, though her installation is corrupt to be fair, but she refuses to reinstall Windows no matter what, and it's been like that for two years now, …).

elsandosgrande reacted to GCandy77 in Pop Os 20.04 not booting after system upgrade
I`ll wait for someone else to give a better answer ... PopOs has never given me a "prompt" to reboot ...
In the past every time anything that has been upgraded and then pauses halfway thru the install, has always continued upon a reboot ( reads from saved cache ) and then worked no issue.
A lot of other sites are suggesting that its to do with the new kernel - your answers only offer your opinion, not any explanation 😑
-
elsandosgrande reacted to Nayr438 in Pop Os 20.04 not booting after system upgrade
You shouldn't have restarted if it was half way through, there is a possibility you have corrupted various packages or interrupted the automated configuration.
Try running "sudo apt full-upgrade" and see if attempts to upgrade the system again.
If it upgrades and falls back to bash after reboot.
run "systemctl status gdm" and post the output here.

I don't get this on Ubuntu Groovy, which is the base for your version of PopOS, so it might be PopOS specific. I'm sorry that I can't really help.

elsandosgrande reacted to SupaKomputa in New Mac Mini M1 chip and compatibility
Basicly there are 3 mode of operation:
- native apps, use ARM code, no emulation needed, this is the fastest. This is how all the mac software eventually programmed.
- universal apps, can be use with both ARM and x86. no need for emulation.
- rosetta 2, x86 apps running with emulation, this will be the slowest theoretically.
Looking at the reviews Rosetta 2 emulation is pretty good.
Usually emulated software runs at 20-50% the native speed, we see Rosetta 2 emulated software to be around 50-80%, which is amazing.
If you're looking to buy an apple computers, definitely go for the M1.
