No. The price difference is not trivial. Even the FreeNAS documentation says "If your system supports it and your budget allows for it"

beavo451 got a reaction from Letgomyleghoe in Extension cord, or long power cord for a PC?
The voltage drop and power loss isn't that big of a deal. The real problem with undersized extension cords is the heat. Try to draw too much current through too small of  a cord is dangerous because the connectors and the cord heats up. It can cause fires. Especially if any parts are coiled up and concentrating the heat.

If you have only Internet service and not phone/TV, you can ask the installer to give you Ethernet from the ONT.

According o the TPLink website, the TL-WR940N has an Access Point mode. It should be a matter of enabling that and it will then function as an access point with routing and DHCP functions disabled. Take note that when you plug the Ethernet cable into it to connect to your actual router, most devices of this type will require the cable be plugged into one of the LAN ports and not the WAN port.

Do you need a commerical firewall? Open-source like PFSense does not fit your need?

There is debate if this doomsday scenario can even happen. I personally don't believe it. Otherwise there would be some story out there about it happening.

Also, if there were even a possibility, then the documentation should include such a warning about such an ominous scenario.

beavo451 got a reaction from Alex Atkin UK in Shielded vs. unshielded and plenum vs. nonplenum
Just get plain old riser cable. There's not going to be enough interference. Shielded cables need proper termination and correct grounding.

Plenum cable is used when cable is run through air ways/channels/ducts.

If your house is on fire, you have bigger things to worry about. There is plenty of other stuff already present that is bad when burned.

Another option to buy an air compressor. Compressed air whenever you want and useful for other things.

You learn by multiple sources. If there are 200 videos that tell you X and 3 videos that tell you Y, then you are probably going to do X.

Learning the the basics of something doesn’t require formal education or “accredited” instructors.

Learning and the exchange of information doesn’t change just because of the medium.

Think about out how much you learn about everything as you are growing up. You learn from unaccredited parents, friends, and strangers.

And plenty of hobbyist gun owners aren't allowed to be SWAT officers.

Just because you go to a "school", pay for an "education", or have a "certification" doesn't mean that you have good information.

It is up to each person to determine the validity of the information that they receive and choose how to use it.

beavo451 got a reaction from HeroXLazer in CAT6A Outdoor Cable
If you decide to use conduit, you should still use exterior cable. The conduit provides more physical protection, but condensation can form inside the conduit and inside the ethernet cable itself. Exterior cables should be gel filled to prevent the condensation from forming.
