    well shit...

do you know how to find the suffix to a specific line? for example,

say that I wanted to print out anything past "10de",

it would be (for example) 10de:0fba or 10de:1401

    EDIT:

🤦‍♂️ ughhhh.... so, I realized that by adding that "subsystem" thing in there, it only lists the subsystem and not the device id as well...
granted, it does show the vendor id, but not the device id.   I'm going to go ahead and figure out how I can isolate the first lines of every "sentence" to just show the ven#:dev# ids.

    EDIT 2:

okay, this is the longest command but it isolates the output of:

    lspci -vn

to just the ven#:dev# by using:

    lspci -vn | cut -b 15-24 | sed '/^evsel/d' | sed '/in use\|Expr\|ster\|s:\|(\|,\|Ven/d' | grep : | sed '/idge\|MSI/d' | sed '1~2d'

I shit you not, this works beautifully. TuT

If you want a plug and play experience then buy unraid. If you're willing to put in some time any other distro will do, I do this in CentOS and Arch and it works fine on both. RHEL based distros generally have more tutorials because KVM is mostly supported by Red Hat, so something like CentOS or Fedora would be a good place to start.
Any distro can have a gui desktop, you just have to install it yourself for some.
I don't recommend this, if you have another windows computer just put the graphics card in that.
This is going to be hit and miss on any distro and I don't think unraid supports this use case.
That doesn't require passthrough of any kind. Arguably it doesn't require a VM either, you can just use the host system directly.

Generally speaking it would be better if you asked specific questions about problems you encounter instead of a megatopic like this - you'll get better advice. Looking at this wall of text I barely know where to start and it's rarely as simple as "what is the best distro for <x>".

It's not on the list but I'd look into PROXMOX. It's free but offers a paid subscription. I have heard though that GPU pass-though is suppose to be a pain on it so it may not be your best option.

If you're not afraid to spend money and sticking to the list I've been told unRAID is suppose to be really easy to pass-though GPU's with.

Passthrough in VMware is rather easy, but the main issue is you can't use Nvidia cards. They get the infamous error 43 which cannot be fixed as it's a lockout in the driver once it detects a VMware virtual machine. UnRAID is the easiest bar none.

I could recommend you this laptop: http://www.eluktronics.com/W650KK1-BYO

It is the Eluktronics w650kk1 and you can choose *any lga1151 CPU for it.

(the " * "  Was put there because the laptop won't support certain CPU's because of power limitations for it's platform AND as well as to prevent damage to your laptop.)

GTX 1050 ti 4GB w/ (INSERT CPU HERE) of your choosing with your laptop.

performance with a hyperthreaded dual core?

    For Fortnite: 40 avg.,  * 59 max.

(59 FPS due to screen's limitations unless using external monitor)

Oh!  The NVIDIA gpu is also desktop class low-tdp and not the mobile version.  So you quite literally have a mobile budget gaming "Desktop" that can fit in your backpack.

    There's more!  Virtualization enabled and device passthrough enabled.  ( VT-X, VT-D. )

Well, I grew up in the mountains here in CA, and there's gigabit internet in Alaska.

If anything, there are more things that are perfectly planned out.

I can heat up my room with just my computers (granted that I will need to do some anti-condensation voodoo on my hardware before even applying power to them), I love the cold weather, I love fresh air and the aurora borealis (on some nights), and I can be a snow plow driver on the side while working as a welder, hell, I could probably weld some networking pipes sealed so everyone can enjoy their fast internet.

I wonder if Tunnel Bear can dig while I weld.

You would be better off having a laptop that has a hyperthreaded dual core processor because:

    1. IF configured, you can disable hyperthreading in class and opt to a power savings option while in class.
    2. when in your dorm room or at home you can enable hyper threading for higher performance.

secondly, if you are going to do some gaming then get (IF you want to of course):

    1. EXP GDC BEAST v8.0 external graphics card dock.
    2. GTX Geforce 1050 ti (great budget card for 1080p, 60fps.)

However!  BEFORE you buy those, consider the following:

if you are going to get these items, please make sure that the laptop has an NGFF or mPCI-E slot, otherwise you won't be able to connect an eGPU  (the eXP GDC BEAST I mean.)
If the laptop has a dedicated M.2 slot,  PLEASE make sure that it is PCI-E based and NOT SATA-based.  It will NOT work if it is SATA-based.
if the laptop has ONLY an NGFF slot or an mPCI-E slot then there will be a WLAN card occupying it.
Also, make sure it is a laptop that is able to use the unofficial dock.  Most laptops will have whitelists or things that can be used while others can't be used in that slot.  Like a picky 8 year old in otherwords (just an expression.)

It shouldn't cost you any more than $400 if not $500 altogether.

    or

You can get this laptop instead:  http://www.eluktronics.com/w650kk1

everything you need is inside (if you add whatever you want in the drop-downs or the options you want to order with the laptop.)

Well, in this particular application I forgot to mention that those two GPUs will be the "Heads" or the "Hosts" for my nvidia shield portables (well, two of the shield series anyway. Different gens I mean. )  One gpu for the windows 8.1 vm and the other will be for my host os (Ubuntu specifically.)      So, If I wanted to (in any case), I can activate my windows vm and I can start gaming (Not to mention if there are any bad viruses, I can use the snapshot feature that the vm manager has.   Take that indian scammers!)   So, virtually no downtime and/or any hassle in the long run.

Plus, it will be part of Project "OM3GA",   and I can explain what that is if you want.

You will be more limited by the fact that your using express card as the connection. I recommend trying to connect directly to one of the (if you have) spare mpcie slots on your laptop. Generally those will be faster then expresscard which is usually highly limited.

I can confirm. EXP GDC made a new eGPU adapter that 2x or 4x the bandwidth of what they offers. It uses two HDMIs to conduct data transfer and uses M.2 M key to do the magic as it offers up to PCI-e x4.
So all new generation Intel Wifi solution that uses M.2 M key should be able to use this new version to use eGPU.
