    Today on CUDAs hardware misadventures:

I tried to simultaneously format a securely wiped samsung SSD to NTFS while also trying to update the firmware at the same time.

Needless to say both the programs froze and stayed that way for several hours, until I was forced to yank the drive from my PC. At that point the SSD was "bricked"

I did save it though, I force-flashed new firmware onto the SSD, now it works again.

don't be CUDA people, don't try to format an SSD while updating the firmware at the same time

Got an HP ML10 v2 server with some haswell i3, 32GB of DDR3 and a 500GB HDD for $120 today. For that price I can resell it and make maybe a $50 profit.

But I really did it because i'm gonna throw an i5-4570S + 8GB of DDR3 from the scrapyard in there and give it to my dad. My dad is still running a sandy bridge pentium, i think it's time he had an upgrade.

The thing i'm really interested in is the X58 motherboard, I don't really care about the rest of the system TBH. I also found a guy selling a WD green 3TB HDD for $25:

Got scope bit today. Guess you could call it a Christmas miracle...

My eye socket is intact and I didn't get a concussion, so I'm fine other than some slight bruising and a cut that will likely turn into a scar so that's fun.

You know how your parents don't care about technology and just want stuff to work? Well I think i'm getting to that point.

When you get older you end up getting bored of messing around with PCs, and at some point I just want to use the damn machine for doing stuff. Because that's all a computer is, a tool. I'm not going to spend my life obsessing over a tool.

for example, 5 years ago I may have switched from my current laptop to the old lenovo laptop I found at the scrapyard today because my current laptop has a soldered-in CPU while the one I found there does not.

then I realized it really doesn't matter....

I don't want to spend my time mucking around with a laptop just so I can end up with something basically the same as I have now, it's not worth my time. I would rather spend that time sleeping, being on this forum, reading or doing some other stuff. My laptop I have works, so why change anything?

Because at the end of the day our computers are used to accomplish some other task. Since i no longer have joy from swapping hard drives, installing more RAM, or upgrading a CPU, the thrill of new hardware has kind of been lost.

Now I use my computer for doing actual work, and I have mostly stopped messing around with it. I just want it to work and do it's job, and I will upgrade my machine when it comes time to. but for now it works fine, so why do anything at all?

I've reinstalled Windows on my laptop multiple times without much hesitation, but the thought of doing it on my desktop when I upgrade my CPU and motherboard...dear God. For some reason, it stresses me out every time I think about it, even though all but some mods for some games and maybe some other little things are cloud saved and cloud accessible.

I went back to the scrapyard today:

I found an 8GB stick of DDR4 SO-DIMM and an i5-6600 non-K. I got them for $5 and I used the RAM to upgrade my laptop from 8 to 16GB.

The CPU I found was "not for sale".

The owner there caught onto what I was doing. He has now hired a low-skill employee who goes around, picks the valuable bits out before I can even get there and resells the chips and RAM himself online.

I have now been pushed out of the market, the scrapping for PC parts dream is dead, at least there. I have another much smaller year I go to, but they don't have nearly as much good stuff. Mostly useless core 2 duos. Sometimes something cool will turn up like an x58 mobo and 16GB of RAM, but I usually only find that there once a month., not every single day like at the yard I like to go to.

I will have to look for a new yard to explore.

The good news is I can come in and buy single units of things for personal use, but no reselling them. I can pick up a few sticks of RAM I find and use them myself, but I can no longer buy 10 pounds of 2GB sticks of DDR3 to resell online for $500+ for the whole bundle.

This is the problem with a skill that can be picked up in a few months. If the money comes too easy, others will figure it out and competition will emerge, thus driving out all profit margins anyone would've made.

I suppose I should be going back to focusing on getting my engineering degree. Engineers make good money and they can simply afford to buy all the stuff I always grabbed out of the yard new.

I ordered something from Newegg recently and they shipped it Fedex Smartpost. Smartpost is when Fedex ships a package the cheapest way they know then hand off the package to USPS later to deliver it. Basically it's a partnership between both of them to save the most money possible. Sometimes fedex smartpost does really stupid stuff, like this:

The package was in Michigan the state I live in, then they brought it back to Ohio. Because that makes sense...

I mean I understand when you select "free shipping" when you buy something, they're gonna find the cheapest carrier and I expect it to take a week plus. When I sold stuff on ebay I understand how much shipping can cut into a retailers margins so I get it. But Fedex, what the hell are you doing?

In the event that my ISP decides to throttle, charge, or otherwise inhibit my connection to this site, I just want to say to everyone on this forum: It's been a good run and I have enjoyed every second I spent here. This is by far the best community I have ever found online and I'm glad I joined and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. I have thoroughly enjoyed every interaction with you all, and I will severely miss everyone if I lose connection. It really bothers me that people thought this was a good idea; hopefully this doesn't get past court or anything.

I want to thank everyone at LMG for everything they've done; LTT, CSF, and TechQuickie are some of the best channels I've ever found on YouTube and I'm glad I did. Their content is some of the best I've found on the whole wide web. I first joined these forums on September 6, 2016 for the Razer Blade giveaway and I'm truly glad I decided to stay. My life wouldn't be the same if I hadn't decided to join these forums. Once again, I want to thank everyone here and everyone who maintains these forums, the staff, LMG themselves, and of course the absolutely brilliant community of people who use this forum. I've learned a lot over my time here and that wouldn't have been possible without everyone.

It's been great being here and meeting and interacting with you all. Y'all are just absolutely fantastic and I will miss you all should I lose connection.
