$300 USD or less IMHO, so ~$400 CAD.

Its a quad with hyper-threading, Skylake architecture, and clocks in at 3.4 to 3.8ghz.  So something like a i7-6700 non-k, just a bit slower.

With a linux live USB stick or CD/DVD you can natively read the HDD.  HFS explorer should also probably work if the HDD isn't totally trashed.

No, it will not boot OS X on a non Apple laptop.

You cant do that with a non-K CPU.  The multiplier is locked.

If its not in the device manager its one of two things, fried audio codec or disabled in BIOS.

I dont think I would build a new rig for PUBG.

My $250 special (E3 1220, 8gb, 750 Ti) plays it pretty good at 1080p/100% resolution scale, nearly 60 fps after prodding the settings a bit.

IMHO, where PUBG is broken is in the higher detail settings. Not a ton of benefit for massive requirements increases. It's kinda like gambling, you dont know if your upgrade will actually increase performance or even allow you to increase settings significantly.

Integrated graphics.  Not useful so much when you have an add in card, but it can be used to diagnose GPU issues if they arise.

Lower clocks but more cores.  Most games still prefer higher clocks.

Only if the 1500X is on sale.  The 2400G has very similar CPU performance for less.

Windows Server 2016 Essentials does not support the RDS role, you can have a maximum of 2 concurrent administrative remote sessions.

Have you considered just buying a QNAP NAS for network file storage then on your router setup multiple port forwards to the dedicated workstations for people to use? You can forward for example external port 6001 to 3389 (PC1 internal IP) and 6002 to 3389 (PC2 internal IP) and so on. If you only need file storage and no other features of Windows Server Essentials it's not worth paying extra for it or a higher end server than what is required.

For that actual server you are looking at that is a decent deal but only if you need more than network storage.

It'll be cheaper overall to buy a NAS and spend more on the workstations which you'll get more productive use out of.

You guys do notice that it comes With a Server 2016 License, right?  Thats ~$400 in cost right there.

The hardware alone is quite easily worth ~$1000.

~$1500 is not a bad deal.

    This.

If you have a grand plan of virtualizing everyone's desktop, this server can not do that.  You need MUCH more power to accomplish that, much more expensive software, and a knowledgeable IT/IS staff.  Something like $20,000 in hardware alone is a good place to start.

Think 7 gamers one CPU level of cost.

The change in the layout hasn't pushed me here as much as simply not being on the bleeding edge currently.  I very rarely use any of OCN's threads outside of clubs and news, where here I tend to hang around to LARP as tech support. <_<

    Define older games?

Phenom II is ~C2Q IPC, if you get 4ghz out of it you will still run into CPU limitations in older games with that setup, unless we are talking pre-2010 games.  In which case GTX 570 SLI will still run into CPU limitations because of the sheer FPS they will push.

1090t will perform worse in reality due to ST performance being lower, significantly lower.  Most games can use more threads, but the primary thread still sets the game performance.  I have some dual CPU Xeon workstations that prove this point.

The difference as far as I can see is ~60.  Solely for gaming the i5 is likely worth that extra $60.  As soon as you say "I want to do other things besides gaming" that value goes away.

i5 for strictly gaming, R5 for general purpose performance in addition to better cost.  Perhaps saving up to $100 on the MB/CPU if you use a really cheap B350 board.

Personally I wouldn't put an R5 six core on a sub 100$ board, but it can be done if you do not expect to overclock or if you dont go crazy with voltage and monitor VRM temperatures.

Jeesus, you are not even worth my time, I must hate myself.

Look at the 3DPM benchmarks, the neural net benches, nearly all of the rendering benches.  Hell, in some of them the 2400g is approaching i5 six core numbers.

Yes, 2400g supports PCIe m.2.  Who the hell is giving you this "info", Ryzen APU PCIe layout is...
    8x GPU, 4x NVME, 4x PCH.

Those "14" chipset PCIe lanes are squeezed down to 4, its just a PCIe switch.  This is nothing intel specific and you are grasping for straws at this point.  An average person/gamer does not need more than 4 sata connections and one m.2 slot.  Hell, Im an "advanced user" and rarely have more than 4 sata devices in a system, let alone multiple m.2 drives.

I have servers with the I/O I need for doing server type things.  Why would I settle for tons of shoddy second rate I/O when a $250 (or even e-waste picks if you know where to look) server gets me the real deal.

Not quite true.  In Windows Vista and later all extra monitors are rendered on the primary GPU and copied to the secondary GPU's to display on their outputs.

Never liked plugins for "vanilla" servers because keeping up to date was a serious problem.  Also never had a server with more than ~50 people, so maintaining a whitelist was the simplest way to go.
