$100 for a Phenom II X6 1090T worth it?

Troika

Well, $99.99 with free shipping and 30 return policy from a seemingly good seller on ebay. As far as the board inquestion, an Asus Crosshair II Formula, its the best chip that it supports. There's 1055Ts listed for less so my question is just that. Is it worth grabbing the 1090T for $100 or a 1055T for $65, also with free shipping and 30 return.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenom_II

my guess is 1090T

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Phenom_microprocessors#.22Thuban.22_.28E0.2C_45_nm.2C_Hexa-core.29

which is right

x14 and slower speeds is the 1055T

x16 and higher speeds is the 1090T

But not by much, so is $35 difference much for you?

I should have looked it up first before asking ^^; The 1090T is also a black edition cpu and the 1055T isn't so $35 for overclocking is a moot argument.

Now I just need a good psu 850w+ psu and I'll have the guts for my desktop. :) A case would also be very handy. x3

Its still outdated cpu but if thats all you need then its fine.

Otherwise look at AMD's lineup for a new build, like the igpu cpus such as the 2400G, or the 1600.

But then again I would seriously look at refurbished unit from newegg, lemme find some for you.

I know those cpus you listed have 6 cores but do they have 12 threads, or just 6 threads?

Either way even a 4th gen i5 will beat the X6

Yep, an outdated cpu for an outdated board. :)

Nah, I have a brand new gaming laptop that I actually posted about here a few days ago. Its a sager p750tm1-G with an i7 8700k & a gtx 1070. The computer this chip is powering is basically gonna be a guest gaming computer/extended file server/backup computer that's gonna have a pair of gtx 570s in sli cause I got them for $10 each and they work beautifully. The only part I really prefer to have new over used is the psu and right now, the prices are a little bloated cause of all the miners. >:T

Ok, then grab an older i5. Basically the same thing.

The AMD CPU is garbage, and it'll struggle with a lot of current titles, plus the motherboards are getting older in age.

That is obsolutely right.

Buy what I suggest and you will be out ahead of the game!

You could even sell your AMD shit to some sucker, for say $40-$75 if its a whole pc.

Then buy this -

Refurbished: HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF i5-4570 3.20GHz 4GB 160GB Win 7 Pro 1 Yr Wty $174.99

And your only in it for $100-$125

And thats what ONE SINGLE SHITTY AMD CPU costs

Exactly. My buddy was using that CPU, and it was....painful. Plus some games don't even support it without patches later on (Destiny 2), and I only see that being more common as we go forward. We're looking to sell my roommates old PC for $250 CDN complete, so $99 USD for just the CPU is a total rip off.

I'm not interested in playing new titles on this computer. I need it to run older games like Doom 3, Quake 3/4, Civ 3+, Age of Empires, basically lan games. I've only invested, with the 1090T I just grabbed is about $150 all I need is a good psu and a large enough case.

I wasn't looking for opinions on the build, just opinion on the cpu and its price itself. Beyond that is beyond my interested and not worth spending more money that I have to.

So you are telling all of us at LTT that you'd spend $100 on an AMD X6 cpu and have very poor performance!

Rather then spend $135 for an ENTIRE PC with a i5 4th gen cpu, o/s, case EVERYTHING, a complete working pc.

Yes because I have the parts and I want to use them rather than just throw them out and be wasteful. On top of that, after the computer dies or is no longer useful to me, I can just replace the guts with brand new components and keep using the existing case, psu, hard drives and probably the cooler too. If I buy some crap from dell or hp, there's very little to nothing in it that I could reuse. In the long run, this solution is cheaper than the one you propose.

$50 or less only.

You can get an E3-1220 and a board for $70 total.

Also, according to futuremark, the 1090T is between the i5 4590 and the i5 4670k. That is not a bad place to be. To that point, a 4590 sells for $135 with free shipping and a 14 day return but 20% restock fee and a 4690k (which I used to have and sold a while back to offset the cost of my laptop in January) $172 with free shipping but no return.

I also would do that were I building a high end gaming computer but my laptop with a z370 board an a 8700k still puts just about any other solution to shame unless you have a larger budget in mind.

1090t will perform worse in reality due to ST performance being lower, significantly lower.  Most games can use more threads, but the primary thread still sets the game performance.  I have some dual CPU Xeon workstations that prove this point.

I'm not using this computer for most games, I'm using this computer for older games were multiple threads don't matter as much and either does cpu performance. 1090T is soley there to minimize the bottlenecking from a pair of gtx 570s 1.25GB in sli.

Define older games?

Phenom II is ~C2Q IPC, if you get 4ghz out of it you will still run into CPU limitations in older games with that setup, unless we are talking pre-2010 games.  In which case GTX 570 SLI will still run into CPU limitations because of the sheer FPS they will push.
