I've started a new job, home based customer service agent. The main requirement is to have a dedicated machine, as specific software needs to be loaded.  I was somewhat bemused that I needed to spend my own money to do this, so I looked at their minimum spec which was quite low. Although from what I have read some people were spending £100's on new machines. I was determined to get a machine that was relatively new but cheap.
The RM One! An all in one computer that really is impressive, they use them in Schools here in the UK and often sell the old stock to Computer Recycler companies, which I found one for £85 on eBay. Bargain!

    Specs are as follows
Windows 7 Professional 19" Wide Screen LCD Nothing Special, but adequate. Intel HD Graphics x2 2GB PC3-10600U Elixir RAM Intel Core i3-2100 3.1GHz Processor 1TB HDD I would say the machine is about 5-7 years old, I chucked in a 120gb SSD and 8gb of 1600 Corsair ram I had laying about. Also updated to Windows 10 for free and I was rolling. It's responsive, even the IT guy who remotely installed all the programs I required was impressed how cheap it was for the spec. I'm more than happy with it, wee gems if you're looking for something reasonably compact and officey.

I know it's not technically a build, but I thought it was interesting enough to post. I hope someone else finds it useful too.

Just dont put MSAA on 8x and you should be fine,  if you arent getting 60 fps you just turn down MSAA

If you have the money 144Hz is better, but 60Hz should not be that big of an issue unless you are used to 144Hz.

Yes, by quite a margin too. As well, the 1060 mobile version is quite similar to the desktop whereas the 970m is noticeably worse than the 970, widening the gap even more. I'd say th eperformance gap is probably at least 20% if not more.

MX300. Best controller, highest capacity, and Micron makes their own NAND.

If you have a CPU bottleneck with that usage then yeah, go for the i7.
What resolution are you playing at? What's your GPU usage looking like?

You should ignore response times, they're meaningless.

Best would be the Asus PG279Q GSync monitor, if you're willing to spend that sort of money.

Honestly depends on how much video rendering "some" does not seem to me to justify such a loss on graphics performance. If there was a way for you to get a 1070 and i7 then do that.

Depends on color scheme. or whichever brand you have better experience. Both are good brands. One of my friends owns the Gigabyte, you cannot go wrong either way.

if you could make it to a microcenter you could get the 6600k for 199$ other wise i would hold off for black friday and you might be able to pick one up around that price anyways

This is fine. No cardinal sins. It is a duo-core. This is basically a pay what you get for. Won't be able to play games, will serve school use fine.

These are both the older models. Go on the Dell.ca store to see the new ones. Recently they had a 300USD sale on the 15in in the US for Black Friday, so I'm expecting some Black Friday sales for Alienware. Look out for them.

Also a tip for buying from Dell is ALWAYS ALWAYS go through sales. You can get sick discounts if you play your cards right. Say the laptop retails for 2k. Tell them you want it and your on the fence to pay TODAY and that you have a hard budget of 1700. If you play it right you'll get them to play random discounts that you will have never heard of to reach that price point. They earn a commission on every sale so they would rather get a quick sale with some discounts applied than spend hours trying to convince someone to buy it. Always remind yourself you have a HARD budget, because the second they sense you can budge on it, they'll move the price up. Also if it doesn't work with 1 rep, try another. If you've tried alot, understand that sometimes there just aren't sales at the point in time and it's hard for them to help you. Basically understand how these things work and be flexible.

You will have to turn settings down but your issue is the GPU not the CPU as one poster stated.
