PNY 1060 3GB vs MSI 480 4GB?

mdaniels5757

Hi,

I am deciding between this PNY GTX 1060 3GB and this MSI RX 480. Both are $179.99 after rebates.

Which card should I get?

Thanks!

I'd go with the RX480. 3GB of vram won't be enough for new games with even current games like BF1 using just under 4 at max settings. The RX480 also uses DX12 which doesn't have that much support now (which is why most benchmarks show that the 1060 is slightly faster using DX11) but when DX12 is more commonly supported, the RX480 will smash the 1060. If you can afford it, I'd even think about getting a 8GB RX480.

Also PNY is a shitty brand, would not recommend getting anything from them.

go with either RX480 4gb, or GTX 1060 6gb. and don't be afraid of XFX if its cheaper, they're great.

the 6GB 1060

Sure, I'd like that, but I don't really want to spend in the $240+ range. As such, I'd really prefer to keep under ~$200.

1060 3GB is better in most game

question is: are you planning to buy a new card in the next year or so?! if yes, go with whatever you desire

but if you don't .. I strongly suggest that you consider very carefully on putting more money into your acquisition; at 1080p games have already started to show increased VRAM usage and things will get worse, not better

yeah, not my problem GTX 1060 only has 3gb vram. you'll notice I still recommended the GTX 1060 6gb.

the 6GB 1060

Thanks for all your help. With your VRAM concerns and my budget in mind, unless it represents a far worse value (only playing at 1080p60 though), I'm thinking I'll go with an XFX 8GB 480. What are your thoughts?

Yes, but a 1060 6GB is cheaper

Huh? XFX 480 8GB is $210 after rebate on Newegg; cheapest non-mini non-PNY 1060 6GB is $235...

480 if you're going to upgrade your monitor in short future.

1060 6GB if you planning to keep the card for 2-4 years unless you're slowly turning to PCMASTERRACE elitist that upgrade/switch Gpu on every new release.

The 1060 3Gb is on par with the 6Gb version in many reviews because the card boost speed is higher than the 6Gb version.

Both 480 and 1060 is bandwidth starved card.
