raystriker98 reacted to brandishwar in Data Encryption vs Government Backdoor Your Thoughts/Opinion
It's quite simple: any "back door" into an encryption system to allow government entry merely invites intrusion. Individual privacy trumps any assurance of government safety. Your right to privacy, your right to protection against searches and seizures is so sacred that, at least in the US, it's enshrined in the Constitution, and has been continuously upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States. So much so that the government cannot force you to submit to a blood test without first getting a warrant from the Court.
Since the government can't just arbitrarily enter your home, the same with your private information. It's as simple as that. After all, would you send your private information through the postal service written on a postcard that anyone can read? Electronic communication is no different. The envelope is all that's changed.

Hello all and welcome to my first build log! The goal of this PC was to have a cheap alternative to a core 2 quad for some light office work and watching videos. You will find I chose these parts to provide a sensible upgrade path and so I could put in various components as needed. Enjoy!

Part Pics and Descriptions
I chose this hard drive because it was the cheapest SATA drive at the time.
I chose this ram because it was the same price as the super cheap green PCB stuff.
The reason I chose this motherboard was easy. It was the cheapest board that would accept all the stuff.
I chose this CPU because it was just about $50, provided a reasonable upgrade path, and had 2 strong cores, what my workload likes.
For the power supply it was either this 400 watt delta unit or a 288 watt bestec unit... Yeah.
Choosing the case
When I was choosing the case, I was spoiled for choice! After getting my options down to only 2 I had to choose.
The larger asus one had a standard power button while the smaller dell did not. I thought long and hard here and decided to go for the Dell because of it's smaller size and overall better condition.
Modding the Case
Not much modding needed to be done, however the power button needed to be sorted.
The Brown and blue wires are the power button, so that is all we care about, not LEDs. I ended up just pulling the remaining wires out and making sure there is no short circuiting
So here is the finished block. We have basically a normal power switch, but with some extra block around it.
Here it is plugged into motherboard
Rationale
My decisions for parts may seem odd, putting Skylake in a rig with a $150 budget, but there are plenty of reasons to go Skylake for this rig. Firstly, the upgrade path. The upgrade path was probably the biggest reason I did this, as if my workload ever increases from basic document writing and video watching I could easily pop in an i5 and a graphics card. The only other choices in this budget would be AM1 and FM2, both of witch have no upgrade path. I chose the remaining parts other than the CPU because they were the cheapest parts I could muster up that supported the CPU, while doing what I want. The reason why I went with the 400 watt Delta unit was because I got it for free and it works, so nothing beats free. I went with the case as a placeholder until I get a proper case.
Building the PC
Overall this build went well. I only cut my hand once, which is pretty good for this kind of case. The IO shield was a bit tough but it fit. The mods I did worked well too!
Upgrade path
Upgrades were one of the biggest reasons why I chose these parts. I will first upgrade the case then the power supply, then the build will only get upgrades when my workload increases.

Final Thoughts
Thank you for reading this build log. I hope to see you again in many future build logs, but for now, goodbye.

(for clarity - what this means is that the first winner to reply will get their choice between the two laptops, and the second winner to reply will get the laptop that the first winner did not choose. This does not mean that we're only giving away one laptop...)
Thanks everyone.
EDIT2:
Alright, so @Plavi has officially claimed the New Blade! Congrats on winning
But, unfortunately for @willp3, he did not respond in time to claim his prize...
Our new Blade Stealth winner is @ted542! Check your inbox, you have 72 hours to reply
EDIT3:
Both laptops have now been claimed. Thanks for participating in this awesome giveaway, and please be sure to keep an eye out for giveaways in the future!
Please don't report posts in this topic - all duplicates will be handled before drawing, so if you have double posted, don't worry about it.

raystriker98 reacted to ThinkWithPortals in GPU maker Nvidia and AMD. The overall diversity.
Ah, no.
1: The 480's been beating the 1060 consistently in Vulkan benchmarks. Not many games utilise Vulkan though, but that will change.
2: The 1060 is actually far more expensive than the 480 in many parts of the world (eg outside the US) so the 480 is the better buy due to the fact that it's not massively far behind the 1060 but it is quite substantially cheaper.
3: Polaris was never intended to compete with Pascal. The actual Pascal competitor, Vega, is coming later. AMD made it clear that Polaris was a mid-range offering.

raystriker98 reacted to PenPoint in Is my CPU a bottleneck?
AMD platform is hard to upgrade.
You can either downgrade to Thuban such as X6-1055T or upgrade to FX-8300 and overclock it, but both suggestions have limits.
Best solution is... change to Intel platform.

I can't believe how much of a !@#$ nVidia is, and they have been for a very very long time. I won't ever doubt the boys again at AMD. Those guys are great, and they've always look out for the interest of gamers as a whole rather than as a company. They've shared their technologies and open source with nVidia so that all gamers can benefit, but nVidia will never do the same.

raystriker98 reacted to porina in Compact VR mini-ITX build
I've left the Corsair ram running at 2133 for now. I tried to take it out but... it isn't happening in a hurry!
Still, did a quick SteamVR benchmark, dropping to 10.4 due to the GPU thermally throttling.
Gonna be away for a couple days now, so will then try swapping the rad fan direction, flip the PSU and swap the ram. Almost a total rebuild...

looks like to early for me.
The sell of the GTX1080 is still in full swing, and to maximize the profit (and you can be sure the greedy nvidia tries do this) it will be launched later when all enthusiasts have already bougth the GTX 1080. So they buy two.
unless they are really afraid of Vega. But I don't think so.

raystriker98 reacted to Stefan1024 in [Finished] The number cruncher: Triple Xeon passive mineral oil cooling [Update 12: Final pictures and summary]
The number cruncher
73 cores and a Titan X in oil submerged and passiv cooled
Yes, my friend, it is as exorbitant as it sounds!
My last build was highly focused on single thread performance and it works perfect for this workloads: Link here.
However, I came across situations where I needed a considerable amount of compute power. As these workloads can be parallelized without a significant penalty, I developed a need for this number cruncher. Also I will use if for F@H during the night.
My first attempt was to use two E5-26xx v3 Xeons with the Z10PE-D8 WS motherboard. But it turned out to be way to expensive. Therefor I downgraded to two E5-2680 v1 Xeons on a Z9PE-D8 WS motherboard. As I saved a lot of money on the CPUs and the memory, I was able to include a Xeon Phi 31S1P. MATLAB is able to take advantage of the “automatic offload” feature to seamlessly integrate the Xeon Phi and boost the performance. I won’t write programs for the Phi by myself.
For the GPUs I will use one or two of the upcoming Polaris / Pascal line-up depending on the performance and price. I’m tending towards Polaris, but I have not enough information to decide.
This leads me to the part list:
CPU: 2x E5-2680 (8 cores, 2.7 GHz base clock, 3.5 GHz boost clock, 130 watts): used from Ebay
Coprocessor: Xeon Phi 31S1P (57 cores, 1.1 GHz, 8 GByte RAM, 270 watts): new from Ebay
RAM: 8x Hynix HMT31GR7CFR4C (8 GByte, DDR 3, 1600 MHz, ECC): used from Ebay
Motherboard: Asus Z9PE-D8 WS: new from retail (no used once available)
PSU: Corsair RM1000i: new from retail (I don't dare to use a used PSU)
GPU: GTX Titan X: when the GTX 1080 hype peaked, you got them for very low price, I couldnt't resist to buy one
SSD 1: Samsung 850 Evo 1TB: salvaged from my first build
SSD 2: Samsung 850 Evo 2TB: used
SSD 3: Samsung SM951 NVMe, 256 GByte: used
HDD1: WB Red 8 TB: when the helium can't escape, the oil can't come in right?
WLAN: TP-Link Archer T9E: new from retail
As you probably know, I have an addiction to passive cooling. This time around I tried to get rid of the heat pipes. They are expensive and vulnerable. Also I'm lacking the appropriate tools to make a CPU block out of copper. Mounting the GPUs directly to the heat sinks proved itself as a good solution. Sadly, this is not feasible for the CPUs.
So I will use two Noctua NH-U12DX i4 cooler. But now I have to get rid of the fan somehow. This is certainly possible if you look at the definition of fan:
Source : http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/fan
So be filling the box up with mineral oil, I’m not only getting rid of the noise. There are no fans left in the build by applying this definition
However, the build is not completely passive cooled, as the cooling used needs about 3 watts. But considering the total power this is negligible. So I will call it passive cooling. Also the oil itself is passive cooled.
More renderings:
Update 1: Super loud coil whine
Update 2: Design finalized
Update 3: Xeon Phi
Update 4: Vapor chamber
Update 5: 40 kg heat sinks
Update 6: 73 cores, 450 watts, 846 GFlops
Update 7: How to submerge a HDD
Update 8: It realy hurts doing this!
Update 9: Moved the build across a lake
Update 10: Assembly
Update 11: Filled the PC with 40 liter of oil!
Update 12: Finished: Pictures and summary!
