Some will recommend you install the K-Lite Codec Pack. DO NOT DO THIS. This has been known to cause issues with the Adobe Suite, such as crashes, slowdowns and other issues. The only solution is to reinstall Windows.

Simply transcode them with Handrbake as you mentioned, and transcode them back as necessary.

100 mbps is quite a lot, getting an extra 20-60mbps wouldn't make a significant impact at all.  All it offers is h.264 in MP4 and AVCHD containers with Interframe compression that doesn't require much more data.  Besides, the G7 doesn't have V-Log, so unless you need it for serious color grading there's no point in asking for higher bit rates.

    Just buy a nice router.

Download a free wifi scanning app on your mobile and find any dead spots (if any) - I have a 5600sqft house (huge) and a single, centrally placed router that gives 90% at the very edge of the house from my 2gb internet connection.

If there are any.. since the house is wired.. just place a access point in that location.

Basically it depends on your budget and usecase. If you want to use it just as an NAS, any fairly new Celeron board will do (or maybe something with an Pentium). If you want to run FreeNAS you need at least one GB of RAM for every TB you want to run but you don't need an discrete RAID card, FreeNAS is pure software RAID as well as unRAID etc. will be. I personally have an Parity Array on my Windows Server 2016 Machine but it's similar to the system unRAID uses.
I was in a similar situation because my NAS/Server needed to be silent as well. I have settled on BeQuiet parts for cooling and the only thing you can hear are the hard drives (which is fairly silent) - I am using WD Reds @5400 rpm.
If you want just PM me and I can give you further advice

Most Linux OS's have a server version and its generally free.  If you want to get in to more advanced features. Ive personally never used it. Windows Server OS is hell of expensive, so I wouldn't really bother going down that rabbit hole.

Meh, those are kinda bad. Though It really depends on what your trying to do. There are many reason to make a server. Media, Games, File sharing and backup, etc. You just gotta figure out what you want to accomplish. I mean, you got a spare machine to learn on. If you decide you need more later, then you build a better machine.

In my experience, most of the time building it your self is about the same price as buying a sonoff product. Or the difference is very neglectable. For the ease of use, I would say go with sonoff (~$6). If you want to use more GPIO pins etc, go with a ESP-12E (~$3). And if you want to go to the cheap DIY route. Go with an ESP-01S(~$1).
The last 2 obviously need a power source (ESP12E a 5v supply (~$1) and ESP-01S 3.3v(~$1.50 for 10)) (And you obviously need a relay switch board, get a 5v operated one. 3.3v will still work ~$2)
If you want to be able to tell if the light is switched on. (Despite the state of the relay) you'll need something in the line of a non-invasive AC current sensor such as a SCT-013-000. You'll be needing additional components for it though. Such as a 3.5mm female jack, 33 ohm resistor, 10uF capacitor and a 10K ohm resistor. Schematics are widely available online. (For example http://www.homautomation.org/2013/09/17/current-monitoring-with-non-invasive-sensor-and-arduino/ )

This would make your system a little bit fancier, as you can actually let the ESP check if any current flows, thus if the light is on.

So you install Windows Server with GUI just as you would install any copy of Windows. After the installation is successful Server-Manager will open on the local server tab. There you should
set a name for your server eneble remote management and remotedesktop (so that you can manage the machine remotely) set an static IP adress activate your copy (if it doesn't do it by itself) deactivate extended safety configuration in IE for Administrator (because it is simply annoying) install updates Then you should reboot and let Windows do it's update thing. After the restart go into Server-Manager /  file and storage services / Volumes. There should be a compartment called shares like shown here:

Then simply start the assistant to add the missing data server role. Or do it manually by selecting manage / add roles and features and select the data server role as shown here:

Now let the Server install the role and restart again if needed. Now youd should have the option shares in the file and storage services tab. just click the blue font to start the assistant:

For now we just select the firstoption for a simple share. If you want to adjust futher things you can go to an extended share but to get everything up and running and for simple user-based rights the simple share will do. Now select the path or the Volume you want to share. Adjust permissions and other settings like you want them but basically you can let them as they are. And voila you have created your first share.
If you don't want to do it via this assistant, you could also just right click on youf folder/volume and cick on share. But you can adjust more things via the assistant.

Hope this is helpful enough And sorry for the Screenshots in german^^

If downtime is costing him money, I would advise against doing a custom build.

This is a business. Lost time = lost money. I would suggest either buying a proper file server w/ support (including next day parts delivery, etc), or buying a pre-built NAS appliance from QNAP or Synology, etc.

Think about if the motherboard dies. Okay well now you've got to RMA the motherboard, potentially wait weeks for a replacement, and now his system has been down for weeks.

If you get something from HPE or Dell, they'll send the motherboard using priority overnight shipping, and have a tech on-site to install it.

My next question is: Why do you need multiple VM's on the "NAS"? For what purpose? Why would you need a VM to "communicate" with each machine. What machine are you talking about? A CNC machine or a workstation?

jwworker201 reacted to Rolling Potatoe in Where is the resolution in a projector?
How the colours/pixels are generated depends on the projector type, but except for laser projectors they all use
bright white light from a lamp that is then filtered to get red green and blue subpixels on the screen. So yeah, youll only renew the brightness.

jwworker201 got a reaction from PeterT in Home Nas parts list, is it enough juice?
Datawise it is sure enough juice. You shold be able to transfer at Gigabit speed without problems. For streaming tho I can't help you. I don't have experience with streaming from Celeron CPUs. If you are wanting to use Plex take a look at Youtuber Byte My Bits, he should have a video where he talks about the minimum specs for transcoding / streaming with plex.

I'd go for an DSLR or DSLM...
You can get the Canon 700D (Europe/Germany) / Rebel T5i (US) for around 500$ with an 18-55 Lens. The onboard Audio is okay-isch, but I would invest the 50$ for an Rode VideoMicro (small, cheap but very good sound). But at this Pricepoint you have to strip your 1080/120p and 2160/30p, the Rebel T5i does only up to 50p (PAL) if I recall correctly.

For around 100$ you can get the Panasonic Lumix G70 (Germany) / G7 (Rest of the World). You often get the Body alone for around 500$ but with two pretty good stock Lenses (14-55mm and 55-120mm or so) for around 800$. I would still buy the Rode VideoMicro in addition to it. It sure Supports 2160/30p but I am not sure if it can shoot in 1080/120p

Or if you are only doing video and don't want to take pictures etc. with it just go for an camcorder. I'd love to suggest some pro-camcorders in the 1000$ range but they require some experience with cameras (manual exposure, focus etc.). But for you something like the Panasonic HC-VX980 maybe would be something, found it for 699$ (but still no 1080/120p).

I personally would go for the G7, it is such a great value for the money plus you can take stunning photos and have the ability to learn some manual camera settings if you want such as focus, iso and others. But the auto-mode on the camera is great too. Maybe I am a bit fanboy-isch but I would straight go for an a7s ii or a7r ii if that was your budget, but under 1000$ the G7 really seems like the best option for you and it's beginner-friendly.

    I hope, this helps

I'd go for Powerline (the ones with 500Mbits should be fine) but you have to factor in your home wiring. But in most cases it is no problem. I installed powerline in my parents' house and the wiring is from 1980ish.. Worked just fine (And the signal has to travel over 2 fuse boxes there).

So I would suggest getting poweline and trying it out. If you order on amazon, you can still send it back if it doen't work

jwworker201 got a reaction from ThatAngryGnome in Need some advice on this NAS build
Yes, the recommendations are 1GB RAM per TB so you should even be fine with 8GB. (for FreeNAS with ZFS)

And if you have the CPU cooler and the SSD laying around use it. I have a beQuiet Drak Rock Pro 3 in my home server (but it needs to be quiet).
But if you are only using one LAN-Port on the server a cache drive is not necessary because WD Reds easily have 100MB/s (I believe peaks arte around 200/220 MB/s).

And if you want to set up Syncthing on Windows... There is no official installer yet so you have to download the .zip file and place it anywhere on your hard drive. To start it with Windows set it as service (there is a tutorial in the Syncthing documentation) so you don't have to del with the cmd-window. If you want to access Syncthing you have to type in your browser <ip of your device>:8384

I think the nearest thing would be a misstake in my mx record but I have no Idea what it could be (as I mentioned before)
