Need Help Getting Internet To My Computer Upstairs.

FUTNUTS

Hello, I just built a new computer (motherboard doesn't have wifi) and I currently have it next to my router downstairs plugged into the Ethernet. I would like to put it upstairs in my room, which is kinda far away from the basement. Is there a way to get an ethernet cord up there by using a repeater or something? If so what would be the best for gaming.

Power over Ethernet Ethernet over Power is going to be your best bet but that might not do too well, depending on the age of the home/wiring.

Depending on the signal strength up there (I'd check with a phone or something), you might be able to get away with just getting a wifi adapter.

In my house before I got an electrician to run the cable thru the wall. I just had a 200 foot Ethernet cable going all the way across my house and upstairs. Worked like a charm

Ok, the signal strength is good. Should I get a wifi adapter? If so any good recommendations? @TheKDub

I'd go for Powerline (the ones with 500Mbits should be fine) but you have to factor in your home wiring. But in most cases it is no problem. I installed powerline in my parents' house and the wiring is from 1980ish.. Worked just fine (And the signal has to travel over 2 fuse boxes there).

So I would suggest getting poweline and trying it out. If you order on amazon, you can still send it back if it doen't work ;)

I've used this one. Didn't have any issues with it in the year or so that I used it before running an Ethernet cable.

what has PoE todo with this? From what I understand he has power upstairs too, so incase he needs a switch or anything there he can just power it from the wall, he doesn't need PoE right?

Personally I would just go for a cable. If you use Cat5E 100 meters without any signal loss. I can't imagine your house being so big that 100 meters wouldn't be enough.

Whoops, good catch.

That should say Ethernet over Power :)

PCI express card. Stay away from USB.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
