RossMadness got a reaction from Develosysadmine in I almost cried... - Fixing the $40,000 PC Part 2
The problem I've had with this series is the haphazard why he's approaching this. I think it's a great experiment, and if I had the hardware I would try it too. However his troubleshooting steps don't make sense. Start with one GPU and one VM. Get it working then add another. Also, don't try porting over other VMs. Clean install each one. That's not necessary, but is optimal. This is basic troubleshooting and project management. You don't throw 6 GPUs of all different types in at once and then try and troubleshoot the abundance of errors that could take place. Setting all the hardware out in the open and stacked on top of each other is the icing on the cake.

I really like watching troubleshooting videos. I do computer repair and system management for a living and I enjoy seeing solutions other people come up with so I can have them in my back pocket just in case. This has been maddening though. It makes for a confusing video and ruins the excitement of the project itself. I just about screamed "FINALLY" into the void when he said it was time to go "back to basics" and install everything "part by part".

Linus, I doubt you'll see this, but for my sanity please review troubleshooting methods that help efficiently eliminate variables. It will make your life easier and might even make for a good tech quickie video at some point.

Try manually configuring your machine to use your DNS server instead of DHCP assigning it. Since you can ping Google's DNS (8.8.8.8), it might be worth setting Google as your dns to see if that's all the issue is.

It's been a long time since I had to configure Linux networking, but I believe it's still set by adding the nameservers in priority order to /etc/resolv.conf, but don't quote me on that, or using whatever graphical management utility is included in Ubuntu nowadays.

The website cybrary.it is a good one for a variety of topics. I haven't looked specifically at their A+ stuff, but I've used their Linux+ and Network+ courses and they were good. It all depends on the expert that made the course.

RossMadness got a reaction from Crunchy Dragon in Do I need an A+ certification for the jobs I am going for?
A+ Certified tech, here. You don't NEED it, but like @Oshino Shinobu said, it helps make your resume that more convincing. For me, I don't have a college degree so it made a HUGE difference in my job opportunities because it validated my knowledge.

The great thing about working in tech jobs is that certifications are often looked at as equivalent to degrees in some positions. So you can get more certs moving forward and just makes you a more desirable hire.

PLUS the A+ is two tests at 200 dollars a test. So if you can get your school to pay for that, then you DEFINITELY need to do it. Way better than 400 bucks out of pocket.

Need? No. Good to have? Yes.

It's something you can put on your CV that will stand out from people that don't have it. While it may be that you'd choose to hire someone with good experience, it doesn't matter that much unless you can actually put it on your CV in a meaningful way. There's plenty of people with experience building and fixing PCs, but a lot don't have it as a qualification or employment when they're coming out of education, so it easily gets glossed over by employers.

With something like the A+, it proves that you can learn, that you know your stuff and you've gone out and got an additional qualification on your own. It also has a legitimate place on your CV and it's something you can prove. That is worth a lot more to an employer than you just saying you're experienced in something if you've done it as a hobby, at least, when they're looking through a load of CVs it is.

Since you've already done a fresh install (sounds like maybe more than once) I would boot to a Linux Live CD and see if the ethernet adapter works consistently there. If it doesn't run as consistently then the hardware may be faulty.

    That's not very helpful
Run Hitman Pro, Adware Removal tool, and malwarebytes deep scan/ae. If that doesn't help, it could be a browser extension. Reset your browser, and if all else fails, do a windows refresh.

Clean installing should be the last resort, not the first.  It may not even fix the problem, because chrome and most other browsers sync your settings and extensions with a sign-in. You could reset your pc, getting rid of everything, and then sign into chrome and have it all back again.
If malwarebytes and everything else didn't find it, chances are it's a chrome extension. You know what syncs across installations with a chrome sign in? Extensions.
If it's a chrome extension causing redirects, and he resets his computer, what's the first thing he'll do? Download and sign into chrome, syncing his extensions and ending up no better off, but missing all his programs.

It's this kind of lazy attempt at a response that made me stop publicly helping people on forums, because some jackass will come in and tell me that the thing I've been doing daily for 5+ years can't be done, and everyone will believe him. Resetting a computer should be the absolute last resort; if nothing else can fix it, reset it.

A little education lesson for all you people who say you need to abolish the electoral college. And for those who feel the need to call BS all the time
The electoral college is something our founding fathers created because they didn't want a bigger state to overshadow a smaller states because of a population advantage.
It works similar on how the House of Representatives is chosen.
It was SPECIFICALLY created so states like California with 38.8 MILLION people can't overshadow a state like Maryland which has 5.9 MILLION people in it.
That is why democrats usually win the popular vote. Because their population is thick and concentrated in a few heavily populated areas like California, where 5.4 MILLION people voted for Clinton and 2.9 million voted for Trump.
In Texas, where 28 million people live, 4.6 million voted for Trump, while 3.8 million voted for Clinton.
9.2 million voted for Clinton between the two states, Trump had 7.3 million vote.
10 states have enough population to overshadow the other 40 states. Those are California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, Michigan and North Carolina.
10 states hold 178 million million people. Way over half the population.
That is why the founding fathers created the electoral college. So 10 states cannot overwhelm the other half of the country. Because when 10 states hold half the population, why do the other 40 need to vote when their votes wont matter?

Can you disassemble it, clean everything, and post some photos of the components? Also i'd suggest you to test the PSU. It's the first thing to check, then reassemble it.

Your board has turned into a very expensive brick I'm afraid. The power cut during a BIOS flash means it didn't finish flashing the BIOS properly which means your board has no firmware to give it instructions while powering up. Its bricked.

I'm afraid you have 2 options, 1) track down and install a BIOS chip from an IDENTICAL motherboard or 2) RMA it and hope the manufacturer is feeling kind because AFAIK failed BIOS flashes are not generally covered under warranties.

RossMadness reacted to dalekphalm in I want to watch Star Wars but in what order is it?
It depends on what you want to experience. To best preserve spoilers and "OMG" shock efffect, there are a few sequences that have been developed over the years.

For a first time viewing, I recommend:
    The Ernest Rister sequence (4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6, 7)
Watch Eps 4 and 5 first, then go back to the prequels, which are treated more of a flashback, then back to Episode 6 and off to 7.

This way, once you learn, stuff, in Episode 5, it's not immediately spoiled in the Prequels because you already know the things. It gives you better context and backstory on Anakin, without weighing down the series. It also gives you some excellent movies to watch first, before you have to run through the prequels.

There's also a slimmed version, called:
    The Machete Order (4, 5, 2, 3, 6, 7)
This skips Episode 1 - All of the very important things that happen in this movie are more or less explained or referenced in the other movies, so you don't necessarily need to watch Ep 1.

I personally prefer the Ernest Rister order, as I want to see the complete story, good and bad.

    If you've already seen them, I recommend in-universe Chronological Order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).
