No internet on linux

i can connect but not get any internet. I am running 17.10 ubuntu on my GL62M 7rd from MSI.

I can ping 8.8.8.8 but not google.com

Sounds like a dns error, what is your network setup? Are your network settings configured to automatically get the DNS servers?

My network setup on Linux is default apart from the ipv6 being disabled. I am using a Nighthawk X6 router from Netgear into an 8way gigabit switch into the gigabit on the bthub connected to the 500kbps internet..... but at least file transfers to my NAS are good.....

And this 17.10 settings menu is completely different to 16.04

Try manually configuring your machine to use your DNS server instead of DHCP assigning it. Since you can ping Google's DNS (8.8.8.8), it might be worth setting Google as your dns to see if that's all the issue is.

 

It's been a long time since I had to configure Linux networking, but I believe it's still set by adding the nameservers in priority order to /etc/resolv.conf, but don't quote me on that, or using whatever graphical management utility is included in Ubuntu nowadays.

A. He told you. It's either in resolv.conf (he even told you the location) or by using the network GUI.

Heck the top result is a google article telling you how to change your dns server to 8.8.8.8 on ubuntu. Try, man.

Sorry... I'm a bit stressed and tired .. I did that and plugged in 8.8.8.4 and neither worked

That's not surprising considering 8.8.8.4 doesn't exist. Did you try 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4?

Is that normal for resolve.conf? I changed the dns stuff with network manager

there is a little question mark on top of the wifi and on top of the wired LAN when I plug that in. does that mean anything? And I am pressing the Big Green, Apply Button.
