AshleyAshes got a reaction from Ben17 in Add IR receiver to monitor?
You'd need to have some way to tell the monitor to change volume.  Like, it the monitor can use a USB connection to control it's volume via software which few, if any, support.  So you'd have to hack up an actual IR receiver and then hack it into the electrical connections on the buttons on the screen.

HOWEVER the DEVICE you are using as an input may have volume controls.  For example, if you're using a PC for Netflix, you could set the the monitor to a nominal volume level and then change the volume that comes out of the PC.  You could use a wireless keyboard with media keys that includes volume or MCE remotes have volume control and other media keys as well and Windows will readily use the volume command on them:

It even has a Windows button.

AshleyAshes got a reaction from thekingofmonks in How does a SODIMM adaptor work?
I've been comparing the pins and you're kinda right. the ECC pins are missing. There's also a number of redundant voltage pins that SODIMMs omit.  I actually ordered a pair of these adaptors when I first posted this thread but still awaiting the free shipping from China to deliver them and I'll report my results.  However I think there is promise.  there are ITX motherboards with desktop CPUs in them but also SODIMM slots and there are also mobile CPUs installed in desktop boards that feature full sized DIMM slots, so I see promise here if we're SODIMM is just cutting down on ECC and redundant pins.  Heck, a bunch of the pins on a DIMM are just 'NC' or 'No Connection' and serve no purpose what so ever.  18 NC pins on a DIMM vs 6 NC pins on a SODIMM.  All the data pins seem to be the same, 64 pins on either.

Wrong.  Desktop usage of NAS drives is known to cause explosions.  They're deadlier than a water heater exploding.   Similar to what happens if you try to use a Xeon CPU on any land that is zoned residential.  KABOOM.  Entire families have been KILLED.

AshleyAshes got a reaction from Gunner Doom in "2K" does not mean 2560×1440
As someone who actually works in the film industry and has EXR and DPX sequences strangling them in their dreams every night, I'd like to make a few things clear:  All of that is just a projection standard.  Also that whole '4k is 4096x2160' thing is nonsense.  Particularly that 2160 part.  That's one weird as heck ratio and the shows we work on are shot at much less wide ratios an get cropped later.  The scales of the crops are borderline arbitrary and decided by production.  The exact resolutions and aspect ratios of footage varies wildly from project to project.

Now, I get it, as a movie fan who is on the outside looking in, it gives you a sense of possessing 'special knowledge' for all techno nerd stuff you said up there but we actually don't bother with any of it.  We deal with the exact resolutions and crops because if someone said 'This movie is 4K', that statement is followed by 'But what's the resolution?' cause '4K' means nothing as a resolution to us.  We work at weird wonky resolutions that you've never typically encountered in media.

Let me now explain to you what '4K' and '2K' actually means in the film industry:

4K means: "But it's expensive and slow and it makes the entire pipeline cry like a statue of the Virgin Mary. :('

2K means: 'Woo, dodged a bullet there. :3'

That's it.  They are nothing but approximations of the data sets that we'll have to deal with that we use to judge the stresses on our pipelines.  Sorry to kill the romance for you.

AshleyAshes got a reaction from Vector0102 in Nvidia asks retailers to stop selling gpu's to miners
It really isn't 'Fucking Stupid', you're just short sighted.  In the short term, sure, sales are sales as far as nVidia is concerned.  But large companies like this aren't purely operating in the short term, they are running a long game and building their brand names and the recognition of those brands is critical to that.

Mining eating up sales and making GPU units more scarce can and will push consumers to other options.  Since AMD is also getting hit, the most likely move is to NOT upgrade at all.  This leads to game devs considering 'the state of the market's hardware' and if it's been stunted, they won't develop games to better utilize next generation hardware because too few are buying into that hardware.  So a year or two from now you could have your flagship 'GTX 1180' or 'GTX 1280' that too few own.  So now you have the demand from mining dropping off and consumers are like 'Should I upgrade to the NEW GPU now that it's affordable?' and so many people and tech channels and everything else will be all 'Probably not, game GPU demand has patented for three years.  Your 3 year old GPU is basically just as good as it was new.  Maybe wait another year for devs to get more aggressive again?'  A scenario like that, in the long term, is BAD for the plan.  ...You just have to think beyond 'right now' before you declare it 'fucking stupid'.

Well, except that it's basically impossible to actually be sued.  Yes by Canadian copyright law, while 'Format Shifting' is legal, if you have to bypass encryption or DRM to do so, it still violates copyright law but it is also undectable.  For a torrent, your IP, unless hidden by a VPN, is publicly viewable.  If you use a streaming service, your access is logged by the ISP and by the streaming provider so if they get taken down those logs could be aquired.  If you're HOSTING material, if legal means are used to take down your hosting, they could access the logs.  Meanwhile, format shifting your own media at home is done ENTIRELY offline, it is effectively undectable.  Also, no one fucking cares.  While that may be the letter of the law, even if they COULD detect it somehow, with the maximum payout for an individual's copyright violation is only $5000, NO COPYRIGHT HOLDER is going to get themselves in the headlines with 'PERSON SUED FOR COPYING OWN LEGALLY OWNED, BOUGHT AND PURCHASED, BLURAY TO THEIR IPAD.'

AshleyAshes got a reaction from paddy-stone in Do You really Need ECC RAM for a home NAS???
Again, redundancy.  The entire ZFS file system is purpose built to avoid such concerns.  The ZFS file system is built like a brick shit house but you clearly have no idea how it works.  Unless the data is in memory and being written to the file system, it will just sit there.  Even a corrupted OS doesn't jump up and start eating the file system like some kind of random Skynet creation.  Only data in the process of being written, either in memory or needing to be read from a cache drive and copied to the file ZFS filesystem would be at risk.  And these are the rare situations where ECC can be a benefit.  A random cosmic ray flipping a bit in your memory will not cause you to lose all data.  Protection against this is literally why ZFS exists.

And it makes sense in an enterprise situation.  There's a LOT of data moving in and out of memory to meet the demands of whatever service and you need to maximize uptime.  Meanwhile most end users who have a NAS are just hoarding files, usually media, files that will sit on the storage and rarely be read and when they are read they will be read for a pretty brief time (Relatively speaking).  Hard drive failures, now those are cause for a doom scenario.  Or a PSU failure that just up and burns out everything attached to it.  Power surge in your electrical grid.  Your idiot roommate flooding the place.  These are the things you should fear.  Insisting on ECC memory for a home user to avoid the 'monster' of 'total data loss', that's just ignorant nerds trying to out fearmonger each other.

    1) I think this is an interesting topic and I totally would have reported my results had it not worked.  I couldn't Google much information on an adaptor like this at all, so even a failure would be contributing to the available information.  Maybe someone will have a similar question and find this thread via Google and it'll help them out.

    2) I ordered something on eBay on a whim for twelve bucks, waited seven weeks, jammed SODIMMs into them, then jammed them into a motherboard and pressed power.  There's no 'boasting on how an expert I am', just reporting my results.
