    Summary
Well, it's happened. Allegedly, Reddit has removed several protesting moderators AND locked them out of their accounts. This wave hit moderators who changed their subreddits to NSFW in an attempt to cost Reddit ad revenue. Moderators of r/MildlyInteresting, a subreddit participating in protests, share details on how they were "removed with out any communication" from Reddit's staff.

    My thoughts
Although Huffman threatened to remove mods participating in the blackout, I never thought Reddit would actually follow through with it. Pretty ballsy of them.

Ah. thanks for the advice. We'll see what the exact specs are when I get it. But it seems that the i7 would likely still be 4 cores.

So tempting to buy a cheap B450M mobo and RAM to go with my old Ryzen 5 2600 CPU. But those boards are still expensive for previous gen, and I am curious how cheap I can get this (so far, it's $0 lol).

I am more curious about why some peoples who uses something for free, whining & raging over a few days strike/protest/boycott done by possibly volunteers of a service that isn't crucial in any way, in order to fight for something that includes some users QoL.

It's kinda fascinating in a way.

In what world, is striking "child like"?

They(subreddit mods) tried to reasonably work with them(Reddit CEO), but demands were unmet, the only reasonable and correct action from there IS to strike. Striking is not childlike, your workers/volunteers asked for specific workplace conditions (like mod tools that rely on API calls) to not make them broke when Reddit is telling them the subreddits must be moderated). And the Boss was unwilling to meet those conditions or meet them half way, in fact your boss instead LIES about his interactions with people who build tools based off of the API.

calling a strike childlike is just unhinged Pinkerton behavior.

Like any and all strikes, this strike will hurt all sides, but the point is solidarity and to make it hurt the C-suite more. Nuking the income for 2 days in a row is not insignificant.

The point is, as others have pointed out, that the changes they're making hurts developers, moderators, and users. Use a popular 3rd party app? Good luck -- they're all basically shutting down due to upcoming API pricing changes. Use moderation tools? Good luck -- only those tools that hijack your current session (think Chrome extensions) are safe... for now. Develop a 3rd party client? Good luck -- pricing for API usage is worse than Twitter.

Not to even mention the whole Spez/Apollo situation where Steve quite literally lied about the dev (of Apollo) threatening Reddit in an extortion attempt. If you're really curious as to why this is happening, and what led to this situation, simply read the news -- there are no shortages of articles from most major tech outlets at least briefly covering this controversy.

The 48-hour time limit is likely instituted, as the goal isn't to outright crush Reddit, but to demonstrate the power the Moderators hold, and have Reddit to come to the negotiating table.

I think this is dumb, it WILL cause mass exodus of many subreddits and will harm reddits reputation in general and makes the mods look like total turds. This will ultimately hurt the mods abilities more than it will help. Boycotting isnt going to work, this isnt the 1950's here, stop acting like it.

EDIT: Aparrently over 95% of subreddits are set to private now. it is clear all the reddit mods are having severe case of age regression and the child-like tantrums that go along with that at the same time. No one is going to win here.

This strike is being run by the moderators of various subreddits. The moderators are unpaid volunteers who work on Reddit content. Every subreddit must have moderators to exist, unmoderated ones are deleted.

The changes being made will take away tools that make their job manageable. So, rather than leaving Reddit a month from now when the changes hit and their volunteer job becomes unmanageable, they are demonstrating what that will be like, while the change can still be undone.

Their API is going to block the usage of 3rd party apps and bots/moderation tools, so this will worsen the experience for many users.
The whole point of those API changes is to make reddit more profitable for a possible IPO. If they do something that makes them lose users, which will directly impact on their AD revenue, then the chances of a successful IPO decrease.
Much like any strike or protest, it does make it hard for some other users. If it didn't cause any impact, it wouldn't mean much.
The API changes also inconvenience many users, that's the point.
If nothing changes after those 48 hours, it does show that reddit doesn't care, and many users (specially mods) will leave the platform, making it so that the quality of many subreddits will decrease and more users will leave the platform.

You are correct on all accounts, doing better then you are giving yourself credit for at learning lol.

A NAS is just something that stores data and shares it out via the network. My NAS, which runs on truenas as it’s OS, is virtualized under proxmox. I have a few Ubuntu VM’s, home assistant, some other stuff. One of the Ubuntu VM’s has Plex installed, another had lots of docker containers.

Containers are great because they are flexible, portable, super easy so spin up and upgrade, and just “easy”. Some things are great in continents, some things you would want a full fat OS. So don’t get hung up on which is better; they both serve a purpose.

Proxmox also supports LXC containers which are basically little “spin offs” of proxmox itself, the containers share a kernel with the proxmox host so they don’t need to have all their own “heavy” OS; they sorta piggy back on proxmox. That’s a different type of container, but I have some of those deployed as well for certain things. Again, something’s will work ok in that environment, other applications will not. So it just sorta depends what you need where.

Keep reading up on stuff, it’ll start to be a little less confusing. Then once you start playing with it all, it’ll be a little less confusing again, and after a few years of having a homelab, you will sort of know what you are doing…. sometimes. Lol.

I should note… my virtual NAS (and all VM’s) have virtual networking. So I share SMB shares out over the virtual network interface to other physical devices (my PC, nvidia shield for Plex, etc) as well as the other VM’s and containers. They all work just like they were physical devices, all have their own MAC address and thus get an IP address, so you do networking all the same as you normally would. But VM’s can talk across the virtual network only since they don’t have to talk over a physical cable, and virtIO lan drivers are super fast, so you basically get 10gigabit virtual networking which is a cool bonus of VM’s. Not that your VM’s need to talk to each other this fast, but it’s just cool to know.

Don't try and do everything all at once.

When you get the computer, start setting up one thing.  Maybe you want to focus on Windows and your work research, or maybe you want to install Ubuntu and setup a media serve first, and then think about how to back things up.

But rather than plan and then try to assemble the perfect system that does everything, do it slowly in stages and really learn how things are working.

I would definitely recommend Linux for a home server since you're open to it and willing to learn. Ubuntu server is a fine starting point. There is so much great open source software that you are able to use with linux if you're wiling to get comfortable with the command line (https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted)

You can install your programs right into the OS but docker can be really useful to easily deploy apps (like plex / jellyfin server) and tinker with it.

For backups there are a bunch of options. Rsync is popular, borgbackup is also really good. I recommend to do an encrypted offsite backup beside a local backup.

You can take out the gpu indeed, though you need an igpu in the cpu / dedicated gpu for remote desktop. For server admin you don't necessarily need that and can just remote in with SSH. A gpu may also be useful for plex transcoding.

    Here are the different ways to create a VPN server ;

Windows 10 integrated VPN server SoftEther VPN server OpenVPN server For VPN Pritunl, see @Windows7ge very well documented guide

To start, you'll need a Dynamic DNS service, this is only for the Windows 10 VPN server and OpenVPN server as SoftEther comes with a free DDNS service that is activated by default. Meaning we're going to create an address that is going to redirect to your home IP, so even if your IP change the service is going to work. Alternatively, you could call your ISP and pay for a static IP, but a DDNS is just as good and is free

    Here is a list of free DDNS services, simply create an account and install the client on the PC you're going to use as the VPN server ;

Windows VPN server : TCP, port 1723
    SoftEther : TCP, port 1194 + UPD ports 500, 4500 (for L2TP/IPsec)

The LTT Forum is now 10 years old! What started out as an experiment hosted in Linus's garage has now become a thriving community of tech enthusiasts, with some pretty impressive numbers, thanks in no small part to all of you!

The forum has come a long way from the incredibly unstable VBulletin 5 beta that we started out with in 2013, and I hope you will agree that it looks far better today than it did back then:

The forum exists because of its awesome community. As a small way of giving back, we're going to give away some 1 year Gold Contributor memberships, which give you Floatplane access, based on recent activity on the forum. The giveaway criteria are:
5 will be randomly assigned to the authors of posts made in the past 3 months (so your chance of winning is proportional to the number of posts you have made in the past 3 months), to give something back to everyone that makes this community awesome. Posts removed by a moderator, and posts in Test Posts, do not qualify. 10 will be randomly assigned to members who joined the forum in or before 2015 and have made at least one post on the forum in the past 3 months, to thank our most loyal members. 5 will be given to the members with the most posts that were marked as the best answer in the past 3 months, to say thanks to the members that give the most back to the community. Posts where a member marked their own post as best answer are excluded. Winners will be drawn later this week, and notified via PM by me. The full list of winners will be published here once all winners have accepted their prize.

All winners have now been contacted and received their prize

    Ts&Cs:
Max one prize per user If a winner already has a Gold Contributor subscription, they will get 1 year free starting from their next billing period Current moderators and administrators, and employees of LMG or its subsidiaries, are not eligible The giveaways will be drawn in the order listed. If an ineligible user is drawn (per points 1 and 3 above), an additional winner will be drawn. Winners will have 7 days from being notified via PM to accept the prize (by replying to the PM), otherwise their prize will be redrawn under the same rules. No cash value, non-transferrable, run at our own discretion, etc. Please don't get mad if you don't win. "Past 3 months" means between 00:00 on 01 October 2022 and 23:59 on 31 December 2022 inclusive, all UTC (so it's too late to try and game the system now). "In or before 2015" means the "Joined" field on the account is before 00:00 UTC on 01 January 2016.
