o2 will prolly be an upgrade , but you can make the decision after trying the headphone on your onboard audio.

since you've a good onboard, get a quality headphone before thinking bout objective amp/ odac.

alot of audiophiles actually like tube amplifiers or use them as preamp, there's stuff like the bottlehead crack + speed ball which is very popular in certain community. I can't go into detail because i neither own them nor listened to them before, Output impedence is very high tho just beware.

I do like them with my IEMs namely the comply foam tips , but they are pricy and as mentioned by shearme , they are less durable compared to eartips made of other materials.

heh , I got my HD580 awhile ago for £100, and not long ago there's 2 different EU seller from Head-Fi selling their HD650 for £180/185ish respectively...too bad I already got my HD580 by then orelse... ;D

amp won't improve sound quality that much unless you're playing with different opamps i think and its hard to detect even for audiophile, but don't quote me for it tho. 
 
Thing is , I have a sennheiser HD580 which has 300 ohm impedance and I can drive them using my mobo output and the volume is loud enough at 40% , normal 30-64 ohm headphones is loud enough for me at 20-30%. And no hiss or watever too. ;D
 
P.S altho i do have an o2 amp tho ;DDDDDD
