Jormy reacted to SiRcivic27 in NAS/Sever Noob Need Guidance - OS and Apps to turn old PC into server.
Hi Everyone, I'm building a new PC and have the option to use my 11 year old PC as a server. I'm tech savvy but servers/NAS is 100% new to me.

    What I'm looking for:
    1. Personal Cloud - Backup phones, tablets, computers and access, share, edit files.
    2. Media Server - Access to all the video I have on Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, and Samsung TV's.

    So my questions are:
    1. What OS should I use? I have Windows 10 right now, PC will never accept Windows 11. I'm open to Linux
    2. What apps would be ideal for me?
    3. Resources/websites I should be looking at?

BATTLEBOTS SET TO RETURN  THIS SUMMER!

The only sad part I find, is that Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage's robot Blendo will apparently not make a return to the fighting scene. It was one of my favorite robots because of it's propensity to be asked to withdraw from tournaments due to the amount of destruction it caused. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blendo

Here's hoping to see some amazing robots this time around, especially with a decade of technological development between the last Battlebots and this one.

Edit: I can find no word on whether or not Grant Imahara and his robot Deadblow will return
Edit the second: Some videos for people to watch

On a recent tweet by an AMD representative Robert Hallock, it has been confirmed that dual GPU cards are now finally able to double their VRAM with proper optimization and support using low level APIs such as mantle and possibly DX 12.

    Here is the tweet:

Jormy reacted to ahhming in This battery has lasted 175 years till today while powering a bell non-stop
A bell  in Clarendon Laboratory at Oxford University has been ringing, nonstop, for at least 175 years. It's powered by a single battery that was installed in 1840.
The bell’s clapper oscillates back and forth constantly and quickly, meaning the Oxford Electric Bell, as it’s called, has rung roughly 10 billion times, according to the university.
It's made of what's called a "dry pile," which is one of the first electric batteries.
Dry piles were invented by a guy named Giuseppe Zamboni (no relation to the ice resurfacing company) in the early 1800s. They use alternating discs of silver, zinc, sulfur, and other materials to generate low currents of electricity.

Researchers are afraid that opening the bell would ruin an experiment to see how long it will last.

    Science!!
hope they figured it out as it will be revolutionary !!

Well its a 5ms response time and for fps gaming you want 1-5ms so its decent. Hell to be honest if its free take it no mater if you plan to use it or not worse case scenario is you don't like it and just use it as an auxiliary monitor

Jormy reacted to Techhog in There's a Petition saying Anita Sarkeesian Should Not Help Develop Mirrors Edge 2
Uh, she's the one with the persecution complex. Here, let me give you an example of why this form of "feminism" (which isn't feminism at all) is wrong:

Rosa Parks protested having to sit in the back of the bus and having to give up her seat to white man.
If Parks had Sarkeesian's personality, she would have fought for white men to have to sit in the back and give up their seats.

This is the difference. She doesn't fight for equality; she fights for "justice." Even saying that she fights is a bit much because she really just points fingers for the most part. Do you even understand what sexism is? Sexism is blaming masculinity and men for all of the world's problems. Sexism is saying that there need to be separate controllers and control schemes for women (segregation anyone?). Sexism is NOT disliking one woman for misleading most of modern society about an important social movement, setting it back farther every time she opens her mouth. Before you respond to this, I want you to think about something: You're saying that everyone who dislikes her is sexist against all women. You are effectively saying that anyone who doesn't like every single person of a sex is sexist. That's how equality works. If that's not the way you see it, you're putting her on a pedestal. Again, that is the polar opposite of equality.

Its slightly more limited, as you miss out on one game mode, but its still access.
