Post your experiences with this frequent scam!

My best friend was trying to download Pixelmon for Minecraft and clicked one of those. His dad had to reinstall OSX Mavericks after that.

Adblock + disable for certain sites = no problemo

Just remember that Adblock prevents people like Linus from getting advertising money to help sustain the business. The YouTube advertising funds alone are enough to pay for one person's full employment at Linus Media Group.

This is the sole reason I got adblocker. That, and sites with pop-up ads.

Adblock can be disabled on certain sites. I personally have mine disabled for Youtube and certain Twitch Streamers.

I HATE website that put those type of fake download buttons on them.
I've often run into a site that had at least 5 huge green download buttons/images, all around the page, and none of them led to the actual download, the actual download was a simple hyperlink "Download" at the very bottom of the page. And of course, if you clicked on the download buttons, it would try to download a small .exe, that immediately gets flagged by any decent anti virus...

It's sites like that, that justify the existence of adblocks, that and sites with auto playing music&videos ads/popup ads/malvertising/ads that take up 90% of a webpage... hiding legitimate content with fake contents...

You can use a link checking plugin (as long as it's a legit one) to check stuff with something like ixquick proxy, or use a link expander first if they;re super sneaky... but yeah, as long as they have the hover tag working it's quick and easy..

Just remember, guilting people into not doing something they are already doing when they know the consequence is a good way to get people to despise you.

most fake download buttons are ads, just turn on adblock on download sites, mostly though when you see them you deserve them, because they only show up on the darkest corners of the internet.

I usually hover over each button, then the url it leads to will pop up in the lower-left corner of my browser without having to click on anything. Find the one that's the most relevant (usually the previous site or Mediafire/Dropbox) and you're good to go.

If you don't use an Adblocker it gets easier to see which button is legitimate - it's usually in the centre of a sea of adverts!

How do you whitelist channels with Adblock? I thought you could only whitelist websites as in all of YouTube itself.
