ASETEK – Court confirms judgement, increases damages award and issues injunction

Didn't see this posted, though the same case was referenced in a earlier post relating to Cooler Master and the Fury X.

 

TL;DR it seems like the patent troll (Asetek) has won in a California court, and Cooler Master will have to pay them a ton of money (and potentially pull products).

 

Could we (the knowledgeable enthusiast) boycott Asetek based products in protest? I detest patent trolling, and this seems very much like patent trolling. Yes, your patent may cover the idea of "pump integrated with waterblock," but should that patent be allowed to cover all permutation of pump/block integration? I understand patent infringement that copies the exact design, but something that is conceptually similar but improved otherwise (like Swiftech's Apogee Drive II) should be allowed to exist. I'd like this discussion to focus on Asetek, rather than the potential Fury X impact.

It all depends on how specific the patent is and it seems common in this age to have very non-specific patents.

the only two people i know with an aio have a bad pump, and temps higher than my tower cooler when i dont make my fan curves a vertical line at 70°...

Obviously the cooler master ones would be part of it too :) 

 

It looks like the Swiftech 220x/240x and the EK Predator are the only one that aren't Asetek.

 

What about the Corsair Hydro H110iGT (not GTX).  That one is CoolIT.  Is CoolIT paying Asetek for it?  I read that they 'settled' it but I don't know what that means.  The Corsair guys themselves prefer the CoolIT version as well due to better build quality and firmware

Asetek holds the American patents on this technology. Companies can file for patents all over the world. Their geographical location (usually) doesn't mean anything.

 

Didn't see this posted, though the same case was referenced in a earlier post relating to Cooler Master and the Fury X.

 

TL;DR it seems like the patent troll (Asetek) has won in a California court, and Cooler Master will have to pay them a ton of money (and potentially pull products).

 

Could we (the knowledgeable enthusiast) boycott Asetek based products in protest? I detest patent trolling, and this seems very much like patent trolling. Yes, your patent may cover the idea of "pump integrated with waterblock," but should that patent be allowed to cover all permutation of pump/block integration? I understand patent infringement that copies the exact design, but something that is conceptually similar but improved otherwise (like Swiftech's Apogee Drive II) should be allowed to exist. I'd like this discussion to focus on Asetek, rather than the potential Fury X impact.

Asetek made a brilliant product no one had done before. After launch everyone and their mother started making copies of it. That is exactly what patents are made to avoid. From what I've seen, the CM AIO pump/block designs are very close (part for part) to the Asetek pump/block design. There are other ways to make/design an AIO - Deepcool uses their own unique pump impeller design in their AIO's, just as an example. 

 

I don't see why everyone is ragging on Asetek. CM should mind the patent/licence or come up with their own design. It's as simple as that.

Asetek are not patent trolls. They were the first to come up with the concept/design and patent it. 

 

From what I've seen, the CM AIO pump/block designs are very close (part for part) to the Asetek pump/block design. There are other ways to make/design an AIO - Deepcool uses their own unique pump impeller design in their AIO's, just as an example. 

 

I don't see why everyone is ragging on Asetek. CM should mind the patent/licence or come up with their own design. It's as simple as that.

It's a very sinister patent which includes designs from other manufactures and some aspects of custom water cooling.

 

And they also hold a patent on GPU water blocks too...so it's a matter of time and capital before U.S. customers are locked into Asetek water cooling products. 

 

I absolutely hate the fact that Asetek will be hurting the U.S. consumers, and re-sellers.

Asetek isn't hurting anybody, the absolutely demented US legal system is - without the legal means to do so, patent trolling would not exist

I think it's funny hearing people scream patent troll when half the forum runs asetek coolers.

Meh. I don't use any of Arsetek's products anyway, but I'll move them up a little higher on my 'shit list'. The patent system is stupid, the American judicial system is stupid, and inherently anything involving both of them must be stupid as well.
