my HD7850 got to 70c when gaming.

 

is this a safe temp?

 

It seems high

thats fine, gpus are made to run at 80ish

No, that's not true. The hotter it is, the lesser it'll last.

 

@spwath. 70C is fine despite what I said. If it was 80+ degrees, I'd be more concerned.

Its fine those cards are fine into the 80's I have a Twin Frozr III 7850 in an ITX case thing nudges up against 80 all the time. if it hits 85 i would pull back from your OC. if your not ocing then I suspect a poor mount with your cooler or abysmal air flow.

in theory. gtx 480's ran at 99c and there are plenty of those still doing fine.

NVIDIA also probably made the silicon more robust because they knew it would run hot.

same with amd, all their cards on reference coolers run at above 90.

its a tad hotter than usual, but NOTHING to worry about

TJ Max does not mean it can sustain those temperatures. Nor does it mean it can sustain temperatures around that temperature.

FYI, the 480 runs at 94C under a full load in Crysis according to Anandtech's review. http://www.anandtech.com/show/2977/nvidia-s-geforce-gtx-480-and-gtx-470-6-months-late-was-it-worth-the-wait-/19
