Titan X or two 980s?

For building a customer's computer? I want to create the smallest number of issues if building computer to sell to somebody.

So yeah, single Titan X or 980 x 2? (Ahem, potential customer complaints about SLI issues that I do not want to hear so I vote Titan)

2 980s walk all over a Titan X. Much better option if you can keep em cool.

 

As someone who had 780 SLI and 970 SLI for around 2 years total now, SLI "problems" are beyond irrelevant, I've never had a single issue related to SLI when it comes to playing games.

Occasionally I find a game that doesn't support it, but I still get 60 FPS so it doesn't matter to me.

I would normally say Titan but Nvidia pretty much made it useless when it comes to production/workstation performance, actually with all of Maxwell. They focused so much on efficiency that they crippled everything except game performance. If you compare 780s to 980s, the 780s will actually perform better in workstation scenarios. Pretty much with Maxwell, try to maximize the amount of cores you are throwing at the rendering software to combat the deficiency.

That does not apply when talking about high end cards, Linus has mentioned this LOTS of times, since you're obviously quoting him.

 

When he says things like that, he means don't buy 2 960's just because it's as fast as a 980, etc.

then u get games which dont support sli or work horribly with it. then your stuck with 1 980. and at 4k, the 4 gb vram of the 980s will be filled up very quickly, instead of the titan x's 12.

i can image the customer forgetting to enable SLI every time a nvidia update installs itself

2 980s beat 1 Titan X in gaming and rendering. 1 Titan X has near the same rendering performance as 1 980. 

Forgot to add that SLI issues are so 2011-2012.

You could always leave a note saying that SLI should be turned on after updates...if you don't want to do that then Titan X will be the way to go. Only a small hit in performance.

It's actually quite a big hit in performance, like 15-25%..

if you have more than one monitor then go for titan but i think 4k monitor is kind not there right now with the 60 mhz. if you running one monitor then go for 2 980. this is my options but people have their own opinion

If any game does not support SLI, it's most likely out-dated and doesn't need it anyways.  The whole "doesn't support SLI" thing is pretty stupid IMHO.  Any big popular AAA title is going to support it, and that's 90% of what people usually play with high end expensive rigs.
