Amazon Spent Big Bucks On CryEngine

Amazon agreed to a huge licensing deal involving Crytek’s proprietary tech, CryEngine, according to four people familiar with the deal, all of whom spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak publicly about this arrangement. Though I haven’t been able to pin down the exact dollar figure—one source said $50 million; another said 70—sources say it was substantial enough to help Crytek recover from the financial difficulties that kept them from paying some staff for months, as we reported last year.

Last month, representatives for Crytek teased that the multinational company had struck a big licensing deal that helped save the company, likely a reference to this partnership with Amazon. “It was a huge one, probably the biggest one,” Crytek co-founder Faruk Yerli said in mid-March. “I can’t say anything more in detail, but hopefully we’ll be able to announce it with the partner soon.”

Whatever the specific details here, this is yet another sign that Amazon has big plans in the world of video games. Last year, the tech giant poached Portal lead Kim Swift and Far Cry 2 designer Clint Hocking to work on top-secret projects that still haven’t been announced. Amazon also purchased Double Helix, the development studio behind 2013’s Killer Instinct.

I know this means they bailed CryTek out of a difficult situation, which is good news.. What I'm really interested in hearing, is what Amazon plans on doing with the engine. I'm wondering and kind of hoping if it is them trying to get into the Triple A gaming industry with CryEngine at the source. This could mean potentially a new franchise, with new iterations or just a bunch of planned games using CryEngine. Either way we know Amazon has the money at their disposal, let's hope something good comes out of it.

whatever it is, its not going to be mobile games, that's for sure, cry engine is overkill for it, also i'm sure the deal that saved crytek ass last year was the sale of the UK studio and the homefront IP to deep silver

edit: its kotaku, this should be taken with the biggest grain of salt possible

As phones get more and more powerful we're going to need some 3d engines that aren't nvidia.  I'm alright with that.

i know and they are big enough they can bully the market into changing for better or worse. and they don't have to worry about the crazy shipping they pay with digital downloads.

true but is still overkill, they are better off using unity or even ue4, phones and tablets doesn't have that powerful hardware to benefit from cry engine, even the more demanding mobile games aren't as visually complex as last gen console, right now they are in between 6 and 7 gen in visual fidelity

after all the shit that happened when gamergate and the feminist thing started happening, i have been very skeptical about that site and gaming outlets in general

The only game I can imagine is "Drone Delivery Simulator" coming out of them. Weren't they making a console or something? Perhaps they're planning some exclusives for it?

Do any of you guys think this will effect star citizen? I'm on the hype train for that game and want to ensure a smooth final delivery.

I don't think they bought Crytek, just a big partnership/licensing deal.

Ahh. Any speculation on what could come of the partnership?

AWS comes to mind, as well as their app store, but that's about all I can think of.

I'm calling it now: Amazon Game Studios, its just a matter of time. They have a foot in every other market, they might as well make video games too.

Once upon a time, Amazon was in talks about forming a game development division.
