I'm a folding noob.

so someone please spell all this out for me. write out steps.

provide links. treat me like i'm stupid.

i have two 980s in SLI i'd like to use for the cause.

plus i want some swag badges to increase my LTT rep. people tell me life is all about having things, so i guess i need to have badges.

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

okay, so instead of making a new thread, i'll upate this one. WTF is a work unit, how does one get points?

Work Units (WU) are the "Folding" Tasks your computer has been assigned and to get points you must complete work units.

If you go into FAHControl you can see the status of your work units for example how much % its completed by, the estimated credit/points and the estimated time of completing (ETA) it will even show your estimated points per day (PP). GPUs have a higher PPD than CPUs so having 2 980s in SLi Means you will burn through high credit/point work units quickly.

If you want to get some bonus points every time you complete a WU then get yourself a Passkey by going to this website: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py and then in your FAHControl go to Configure > Identity and there will be a area for you to add a passkey. Also whilst your in Identity ensure that the name you want to use and the LTT Team Number is there (Our Team Number is 223518)

Hope that helps :)

So a rudimentary noob guide would be:

Install F@H Control.

Stark The Client aswell as F@H itself. Latter one connects you to the server, you don't need to keep the Internet-Tab open.

Fill in the user details: your Username, A Passkey for more points, which you can get at the F@H website; and the LinusTechTips Team number.

I'd recommend to Fold on CPU and your GPUs until you fulfill the requirements for the Folding Member Badge, which is to complete 21 WU. After that, stop working on the CPU, it's not worth it PPD-wise. (Points Per Day). All the other badges are achieved for total credit, not for number of WU. So your 980 SLI should do really well in that regard.

______________________________________________________

Advanced tactics for Maxwell cards; read when you got started:

Once you got started and see whats going on, you will see at the WU that your GPU is working on, and a line that says "FahCore". This will be important for you since you have Maxwell based cards. Usually it says 0x15 or 0x17 sometimes some other number. The higher the number, the newer is the WU. Maxwell cards perform really bad with the older ones (15) getting around 30k-40k PPD per card. You should get around 250-300K PPD with a 0x17 Core. So getting the 0x17 FahCores is important for a high PPD.

Now here comes the twist: The packages get assigned randomly, so you could be out of luck and draw one of the 0x15 WUs. However you can delete that WU by stopping your F@H-client, quiting the connection in your Task-Bar and going into the following folder:

/USERNAME/AppData/Roaming/FAHClient/work

And there simply delete the entire folder corresponding to the 0x15 core WU e.g.: '01'

Then satrt folding again and hope that you get a 0x17 WU. If not, rinse and repeat.

With that being said, it takes some time until the PPD number stops changing, so don't give up immediatley if the PPD is low.

who cares...

To OP: don´t do what this guy suggested. Core 15 units still have to be done, whether you like it or not. Deleting WUs just to get more points has the following side effects:

  1. Creates necessary strain on the server, that has to re-issue the WU to someone else, as well as needing to issue another WU for you.
  2. It wastes computing time, that could have been spent on something else.
  3. It wastes energy, as all the work that has been done (up until abortion) is lost.
  4. It takes longer for the researchers to complete their jobs.
  5. The other guy that accepts the WU you rejected will earn less points than if he had gotten a core 17 unit. "Screw everyone else, all I care about is me, me and ME!".

Also, let me make a correction. The core 15 don´t "run bad" on Maxwell. They run just as good as any other WU; the only difference is that they are not elegible for the quick return bonus (QRB), so they end up not being as rewarding.

Holy shit, thank you for spotting that. I honestly didn't read the

thread as op is after the badges and clearly hasn't put any effort

into this.

Deleting wu's can have worse repercussion than that, other than

the fact that it is utter unadulterated idiocy in the first place. It

won't even give you more points, doing it excessively will render

your passkey useless. You won't get bonus points with a low

return rate, and loosing bonus points will hit your point output

more than anything. Possibly even get your Id removed and

generally hold back the project you are supposed to be helping.

Other than than lacking proper ethics, i'm not sure what pande's

specific policy is with people excessively dumping wu's.

@Whaler_99 knows more, they have cracked down on it in the

past.

well, i honestly didn't feel like dumping WU because i'm pretty lazy.

and if this seems like fun or a cool thing to do i'll probably keep doing it.

my step-sister is working on some bio degree right now and wants to cure cancer eventually, so i might let her appreciate what i'm doing.

Well, don't do it :P, i'm not one to say. But i doubt

whaler or ltt wants wu dumpers on the folding team..

One should follow the "best practices" from folding

whenever it's reasonable https://folding.stanford.edu/home/faq/faq-best-practices/

Although the answer is obvious i don't want to place

words in anyones mouth, so yeah @Whaler_99.

Just to make you aware if you weren't already, we

got some pretty great Faq's and installation guides

stickied in this section. Should answer pretty much

all general questions aswell as many of the more

specific ones.

oh, also, i did 8 WU my first 24 hours. is that good?

If you have the regular desktop client, yeah that's pretty

good. I guess that's what a 980 does for you ;) Welcome

to the team. I personally am having a great time with it

and find it very much enjoyable.

is it possible to fold as the same client and group name with a different rig at the same time?

can i fold on 2-3 computers at once?

indeed you can, just use the same name/passkey on

all systems and you are golden. You can to some extent

keep track of how many active clients/rigs are tied to

your id at the folding@home website.

If more than 10% of the WU's issues to you are not returns, for whatever reason, you won't be eligible for Quick Return Bonus points. If it continues, Pande will ban your id, passkey and even blacklist your ip I believe...

i only dropped 1 of 30 so far, because i turned my CPU WU processing off, otherwise i've kept chugging.

there is a google chrome client that can push out tiny tiny WUs super fast. you can get all 21 starter WU in like 2 days.

So is the google chrome client better to run if your using it 24/7 or is the desktop client still the way to go?

the chrome client is good for getting WUs fast, but the points are abysmal.

use the chrome client for the fist 21 WU, then swap to GPU only for those point chunks.
