Why I "hate" on the Corsair RM

Aniallation

Aniallation needs his own wall of text. In the future I'm just going to link people to this thread or copy-paste some of it's contents when people ask me why I hate ON the Corsair RM and throw disses at it and whatnot. If you don't know what I'm talking about, give my profile a visit.

I diss the Corsair RM not because it is a generally "bad" or problematic power supply, but that it is very overpriced for what you get.

To those who already have an RM, please don't whine:

"If you have an RM its not going to blow up or kill your PC, its not a crappy PSU, but it has some flaws about it which is what i will talk about in this thread."

Corsair does not make their own power supplies, it simply brands them under their name. Most of their power supplies aside from the AX series are made by CWT. This includes not only their RM line but also their CX, GS, TX, and HX lines.

***The benchmarks below come from this very informative article on OCN, which goes even deeper into the components of the power supply such as line filtering and capacitors, if you'd like to go into deeper research then what I have presented here.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1455892/why-you-might-not-want-to-buy-a-corsair-rm-psu

When you take a look at the performance values of a power supply such as voltage regulation, you will find that the performance of these CWT power supplies are very closely matched to the RM, with the only varying factors being efficiency and additional features in the RM such as full modularity and hybrid fan mode.

However efficiency is not everything in some tests, the budget-oriented Corsair CX750, actually performed better.

CX750 vs RM750 benchmarks

900x900px-LL-206ee935_2.gif

900x900px-LL-206ee935_2.gif

Back to price, let's take a look.

At higher wattage levels, the Corsair RM750 and RM850 are priced around $130 and $140 respectively, before sales or mail-in rebates.

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-rm750

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-rm850

The EVGA G2, a rebranded Super Flower Leadex based power supply, costs $96 and $116 for their respective 750W and 850W models, again before sales or MIRs.

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20750xr

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20850xr

Let's take a look at how the performance of these two compare.

Super Flower Leadex (EVGA G2) vs RM benchmarks

900x900px-LL-145c7485_01Leadex12v.gif

900x900px-LL-66be6fb6_0201Leadex5v.gif

900x900px-LL-7b8db0cb_03Leadex33v.gif

As you can see, the RM didn't stand a chance.

For the lower wattage level 550W, more suited for single GPU systems, let's see how it stacks up against some competition.

For an RM550, you're looking at $103 before sales or MIRs

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-rm550

The 550W XFX XTR, based on the Seasonic G platform, still features full modularity and a fanless mode just like the RM, but only costs $80 before sales or MIRs

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1550bbefx

Seasonic G (XFX XTR) vs Corsair RM benchmarks:

No direct comparison charts so bear with me

12V regulation:  1.06% on Seasonic/XFX vs 1.54% on RM

900x900px-LL-a6ab54f1_regulation_12v.gif

900x900px-LL-e75d1f0d_1.gif

5V regulation: 1.34% on Seasonic/XFX vs 1.76% on RM

900x900px-LL-16cc1314_regulation_5v.gif

900x900px-LL-206ee935_2.gif

It's a much closer race this time then the Leadex vs the RM, however the RM still gets edged out by the G/XTR slightly, while still costing more for the same featureset. Just doesn't make sense to me.

Too tired to type past this point, might add more stuff later, yawn

The RM series has always been more expensive. I've always opted for the HX series when building for clients, or Seasonic's G series.

In simple terms the RM series is a good PSU it's just not what we expect from Corsair since it is marked at a high price point it should be top notch and of the highest quality of it's class but falls short of that expectation.

Everytime I visit Microcenter, the RM550 would be atleast 100 bucks, while the HX650 was under 90 bucks, this was after MIR. Then again, the RM is completely modular, and that flat 24 pin.

CX(M) are decent, sometimes they do outperform RM in vreg and ripple suppression, although with much lower efficiency. AX are too expensive though IMO, nobody needs a platinum PSU

Basically to all those people, "Please read the reviews and make the proper judgement on your own terms!"

However I must say if you can get a deal at times the RM series are very worth it, I was able to get a good deal on an AX series which made it the same price as many of the gold series PSU's  :)

Why i like my RM PSU:
Flat cables that allows me to close the back panel,
Completely silent,
Good performance.

They are not bad PSUs so you don't hate because of that. You probably hate them because there are many people who recommend them.   You have the beats syndrome hahaha :)

I remember @EcoBoost got an RM650 for $50 which seemed like a great deal.... until Antec TruePower Classic (Seasonic S12G) at same wattage went on sale for $45 xD

The ONLY thing that the RM does better then competing power supplies is ALL flat cables. Some competing units have flat cables aside from the 24-pin.

However this aesthetic reason is no excuse for RM to be good for the money. I wonder if you even read the OP. Power supplies like the EVGA G2 and XFX XTR also have a silent fan mode just like the Corsair RM, and actually perform better while being cheaper.

the nice over kill builds are and the complaint i have about the cx600m is that it only has the one set of 6+2 pin connectors

I did read the OP. All i'm saying is that i like my RM PSU and at the time i bought it, i didn't know any other silent PSU with flat cables. Closing the side panel was a problem in my case, but it's great with the RM.

Overall i believe it's a good PSU, but it is overpriced. There is no reason to hate an overpriced-good product. Just don't recommend it.

I don't hate it. I just make jokes about it as a running gag on the forum. However when people that haven't been on here for long ask why I tell these jokes about it, or ask me why I recommend against it if they're planning to buy one to use in a build, I can link them to this thread instead of having to type it out for every single person who asks. That's the purpose of this thread.

Shilka needs to properly source where he got everything. In actual text, he only mentioned TechPowerUp twice regarding the ripple of the RM1000. The screenshots he provided for the ripples also has TechPowerUp on it, but the voltage regulation charts, fan curve graph, board work, etc. gave no hint that he got it from TPU as well. Not to mentioned, he doesn't give proper quotation to them either, and as such, the readers aren't able to differentiate what is his own words or Cmaris of TPU words.

Can you source them in your opening post? To help, I believe these are the correct reviews you are using.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Corsair/RM750/

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/XFX/XTR650/

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/SuperFlower/SF-750F14MG/

Anyways, there's a few changes made with the RM series. At least with the RM750/850. They have change their manufacturer from Chicony Hipro to CWT. Rather than going for the platform used in the 450-650 versions, they seem to be based on the the 1000w version. Also, they also updated the secondary cap to Japanese (not sure of their entire AVL, but one of them are Nippon Chemi-Con (NCC))

Thanks to EVGA G2 series, RM series just hard to recommend for the price difference and how well the G2's are. Sure people will get them still I wont knock them down for it, but that 30-50$ money could bump an upgrade in other areas..

Hell I just ordered the G2 from NCIX after MIR its going to be 80$ thats a steal for the quality PSU that it is
